I am personally fascinated by warrior kings, so people like Genghis Khan, Timur, and (the far more ancient) Alexander the Great are some other good choices.

Another person out of the Renaissance era (along with Da Vinci) who was influential was Lorenzo de' Medici, who was the leader of Florence during this period. As a politician, he ruled with steadfast, sometimes ruthless actions but was atypically conscious of the will of his people (many despots ruled throughout the Renaissance) and sought to keep their favor, even as he waged war against powerful enemies, including Pope Sixtus IV. His reputation as a patron of the arts is unmatched as he sponsored artists such as Botticelli, Michelangelo, and most famously, Leonardo Da Vinci.
