Fan Control Wireing?

yes i am going to put a ceiling fan in my didning room. i have 12/2 wire in there and it has the hot-nutruel- and ground wire. now i want to put in one of those fan and light control combined switches. can i use this wire for do i need something else.

  1. With just two wires you are not going to be able to control both the light and fan separately unless you have a separate hot wire coming to the switch and a good neutral already at the fan.  12 AWG is heavier than you need but ok.  If you are going to run a new wire, go with 14/3, that way you can run the fan on either the black or red and the light on the other.  The white would be the neutral.


  2. You need a 4rth wire to control the light and the fan separately or a remote control unit that fits in the canopy next to the ceiling.

  3. 14-2 is adequate.12-2 is better.
