Fan Wu Yang excels in Men’s Singles event of 2012 NZ Secondary Schools Championships
Men’s Singles shuttler Fan Wu Yang of Burnside High played flawless badminton and overpowered Jason Van Den Boomen in NZCT NZ Secondary Schools Championships on September 5, 2012.
This tussle proved a real test of physical and mental strength for both contenders as it prolonged to three gruelling sets before ending with decisive figures of 11-21, 21-12 and 20-22.
Wu Yang performed tremendously well and sealed his 2-1 victory by clinching the opening and ending match points.
Jason Van, who was representing Lincoln High, could not break his limits and surrendered tamely in the pressure situation.
There was not much to do for him in the opening game as his rival snatched a vital match point with a huge difference.
In first half of the set, Wu Yang ruled the court in couple of nonstop rallies and pushed Jason on the back-foot.
He was so good in his game plan that the opposing shuttler remained confused all the way to the final moments.
The unbeatable strategy yielded good results for him as he managed to place a respectable total of 11 before the announcement of the break.
Latter part of the game saw Wu Yang cornering his challenger with a flurry of power packed strokes and making swift progress to concluding margin of 21-11.
Next game was also played in the same fashion but this time it was Jason’s turn to prove his class on the court.
He showed strong character even after receiving a severe blow in first set and avoided straight-set defeat in a commendable manner.
He dominated overall pace of the rallies and established an unassailable lead in no time. This initial advantage boosted his confidence and he played fearlessly to read a favourable score of 21-12 on the board.
The decider was full of drama as both shuttlers were real feast for the eyes while striving for the final match point.
They took the game to another level by challenging each other in all areas of the court. They earned a lot of respect for putting such honest effort.
The match remained on a knife’s edge until Wu Yang claimed final two points in concluding figure of 22-20.
