Fan Ying causes major upset at the World Championships - Table Tennis news
Fan Ying from China caused one of the major upsets at the GAC GROUP 2011 World Table Tennis Championships, in the Women's Singles rounds on May 11.
The 25-year-old player defeated Ai Fukuhara from Japan in the third round.
Fan Ying won the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Pro Tour the Polish Open earlier this year. It was one of the major wins of her playing career to defeat the Number Eight seeded Japanese player at the World Championship. The match extended to
five games as Fukuhara levelled matters in the fourth game but Fan was in mood to fight back and she won the final fifth decider game of the match. The final score-line of the match was 8-11, 11-7, 12-10, 11-8, 11-9.
There is a saying in China “Today’s men’s style of play is tomorrow’s women’s style”. Feng proved it wrong with her performance and proved that she is the current and future of table tennis.
Ying expressed her joy on her victory and said, “You have to keep trying, you have to keep fighting for your place and believing”, continued Fan Ying. “Today beating a top eight world ranked player is very pleasing.”
Also there was success for Li Xiaoxia, Wu Yang, Guo Yue, Ding Ning, Liu Shiwen and Guo Yan. The top Chinese players remained unbeaten until the third main Women's Singles round.
There were some non-Chinese players who showed notable performances. Viktoria Pavlovich of Belarus defeated the Korean, Kim Kyung Ah, the Number Eight seeded player of the event. The match extended to a full seven games scoring 11-3, 9-11, 8-11, 11-9, 11-6,
7-11, 11-7. The European champion eventually won the battle.
There was success for Japan’s Kasumi Ishikawa against Korean Yang Ha Eun. Both players have enjoyed the taste of success in the World Junior Championships. A six game match was contested between Kasumi and Yang scoring 11-8, 11-5, 11-8, 9-11, 8-11, 11-8.
Kasumi Ishikawa is hoping to earn a place on the Japanese squad in the 2012 London Olympics. She has featured several tournaments this year so that she could make a place in the squad.
Kasumi said, “That’s why I played in the French Junior and Cadet Open just prior to these Championships,” explained Kasumi Ishikawa. “I want to try to get as many points as possible in order to qualify directly for London.”
The finals of the Championship will be played on May 15 at the Ahoy arena in Rotterdam, Netherlands.
