Fan/fixture box for ceiling fan - anyone make a shallow 1/4 inch?

I now have a 5/8 metal shallow ceiling fan box but it's not flush! Because it's not flush the fan wobbles all over. Anyway...I could only find a 1/2 or 5/8 in shallow fixture box when I need a 1/4 inch. The problem is the fixture mount directly below a double joist, not to the side like many. any suggestions helpful...

  1. if the fan wobbles, most likely its out of balance. this won't be affected by the mounting. most fan kits come with a mounting cover that hides the electrical connections and mounting hardware.if this is missing, you may find a replacement at a home improvement center. as for the wobbling, try placing paper clips on the blades that spin to the inside of the wobble. if you hit the right spot, this will counter balance the heavyer blades. also, one or several may be needed and in different locations. moving them up or down the length of the blades will affect the balance as well. hope this helps

  2. What you can do in this instance is eliminate the box. Simply center the fans mounting plate over the joists, drill pilot holes and s***w it to the ceiling with long screws. (The drywall sandwiched between the joist and plate))

The fan mounting plate and trim cover will now serve as the box.

I know what you are talking about, if the box sticking out a tad too much, the fan will wobble with even the slightest blade imbalance.

I have done this several times and it works fine.

Now that it is mounted securely, you can balance if needed.

I use pennies taped to the top of the blade.
