Question:

Fancy Goldfish. 10 POints!

by  |  earlier

am looking to buy a fancy goldfish this weekend

he is one of the black ones

1. Are they hard to care for?

2. Life expectancy?

3. Is it safe for them to eat Flakes and Pellets? (I read it isn't because it lets air into their bladders. So is it safe?)

Also, what else do fancy goldfish eat?

4. I have about a 10 gallon tank with a power filter, so if I changed the water once a week is that enough?

And is there anything else to know?

  1. 1. Not really.

    2. 20 yrs?

    3. not sure, but hearing everyone saying that its fine, i'm not sure.  when i had goldfishes, 1 or 2 years later, they'd be floating around, but still alive.  If we gave it food, it would try to get to it and eat it, which it did.  But they way it acted, it was like it was fat.  It would just float upside down and do nothing.  but when i go see those fish show things, I see huge and fat goldfishes that are healthy, not floating around.  My fish could be stressed, but you may want to do some more research on that.

    4. That sounds perfect.

    Have fun with your goldfish!

  2. 1. Not excessively hard, as long as you provide it a 20+ gallon tank with a power filter.

    2. A couple of decades - the oldest one was 43 years old.

    3. Yes, that's perfectly ok. They can also eat freeze-dried, frozen, and live food.

    4. In a year or 2 you may want to upgrade - they grow up to a foot long.

Anything else you need to know:

CYCLE THE TANK FIRST. Cycling will establish the beneficial bacteria that "eats" the ammonia and nitrite that is harmful to your Goldfish. Here's some links on how to cycle a tank: http://www.fishlesscycling.com/articles/...

Buy yourself a test kit for ammonia, nitrite, pH, and nitrate. It'll help you monitor the water parameters.

Also buy a gravel siphon and 2-5 gallon bucket. The siphon will let you do water changes and clean the gravel, and the bucket will hold the dirty/clean water. Here's how to start a siphon: http://www.fishlesscycling.com/articles/...

  3. 1. They are not hard to take care of, Its easy

    2. They live up to 10 years

    3. I recommend sinking pellets.

    4. A 10 gallon tank should be good untill he is 3 inches.

    Their called black moors

  4. 1.  fancy goldfish not hard to care just need constant attention.

    2.  12 to 50 years.

    3.  yup flakes will be nicer and easy to digest.  pellets could put too much air in the stomach or gulping too much air could lead to swimbladder disease.  Bloodworm, tubifex, brine shrimp.

    4.  One fancy in a 10 gallon would be enough for now the problem when it grows big.  weekly change of 30 to 40 percent depend of the waste produced per day and how many times you will feed your fish.

  5. lets start with it isn't a fancy gold fish it is a black moore

    1. not they are fairly easy

    2. 5 to 10 years depending on a lot of veariables

3.flake food is fine for them and the air into the bladder is a myth they also like shelled peas

4.no he will need a new tank sooner or later as he will out grow the 10 gallon they don't get 24 inches they have a different body style than a goldfish but like the fancy gold fish they do get about 8 inches long and 6 inches tall

5.your tank needs to be cycled if you do it with him in it you will need ammonia test strips so you will know when to do partial water changes during the first month could be as much as every day while the tank developes the needed bacteris

  6. 1.  They are relatively hardy fish.  After you fall in love with their personality, the care will be no problem to you.  They require frequent water changes, and can have swim bladder issues often.

    2.  The oldest goldfish on record is 43.  They usually get to be over 20 years old if given proper care

    3.  It is better to get sinking pellets so they don't have to gulp air.  They love fresh greens.

    4.  10 gallon is bare minimum.  One fancy goldfish would be ok in there by itself.  A 20 gallon is better.  You can always upgrade.  A filter with a gph of 10x the gallonage is usually recommended beause they are dirty.

Good luck with your goldfish.  Don;t forget to cycle the tank, do weekly water changes and uhh..feed him?

Here is a really good site for goldfish care.  There is a forum there too.  They can help with most questions you have and even have a 911 forum in case you have immediate medical problems.
