Fancy Goldfish Question. Please Help.

i am looking to buy a fancy goldfish this weekend

he is one of the black ones

1. Are they hard to care for?

2. Life expectancy?

3. Is it safe for them to eat Flakes and Pellets? (I read it isn't because it lets air into their bladders. So is it safe?)

Also, what else do fancy goldfish eat?

4. I have about a 10 gallon tank with a power filter, so if I changed the water once a week is that enough?

And is there anything else to know?

  1. They require not much work.Easy to care for in a bowl but a little harder in a tank. They don't have a long life span in a bowl.Depends if they are well cared for. Also the longest living goldfish was in a

bowl.It lived up to 49 years old.So i would say they would live up to ten years old.If you really care for them good then maybe even the 49 year old limit. It's safe alright. They only get air in their bladders if they are over fed. They could also eat live blood worms, not really suggesting.

I would only recommend pellets or flakes.A ten gallon tank needs to be cleaned at least 2 times a week. And they are called black moors.Or maybe your talking about the black telescope goldfish. Also give it lots

of love.Good luck with your fish.

  2. 1. They are relatively hardy fish. After you fall in love with their personality, the care will be no problem to you. They require frequent water changes, and can have swim bladder issues often.

    2. The oldest goldfish on record is 43. They usually get to be over 20 years old if given proper care

    3. It is better to get sinking pellets so they don't have to gulp air. They love fresh greens.

    4. 10 gallon is bare minimum. One fancy goldfish would be ok in there by itself. A 20 gallon is better. You can always upgrade. A filter with a gph of 10x the gallonage is usually recommended beause they are dirty.

Good luck with your goldfish. Don;t forget to cycle the tank, do weekly water changes and uhh..feed him?

Here is a really good site for goldfish care. There is a forum there too. They can help with most questions you have and even have a 911 forum in case you have immediate medical problems.

  3. 1.  fancy goldfish not hard to care just need constant attention.

    2.  12 to 50 years.

    3.  yup flakes will be nicer and easy to digest.  pellets could put too much air in the stomach or gulping too much air could lead to swimbladder disease.  Bloodworm, tubifex, brine shrimp.

    4.  One fancy in a 10 gallon would be enough for now the problem when it grows big.  weekly change of 30 to 40 percent depend of the waste produced per day and how many times you will feed your fish.
