Men’s Singles shuttler Fang Yang Lim of Malaysia grabbed all the attention by toppling Misha Zilberman in first round of Yonex OCBC US Open GPG on Monday, July 2, 2012.
This epic 64-minute battle was resolved with final result of 16-21, 21-13 and 21-15 after three exhausting sets.
It was certainly an uphill task for the young Malaysian but he passed this test by performing exceptionally well against his high ranked opponent.
Meanwhile, World Number 65 Misha Zilberman could not live up to the expectations and faced an early exit from this GP Gold event.
Though, he had a perfect start and grabbed first match point but his rival’s passion and aggression proved too much for him in final two games.
The Israeli campaigner registered his class in first set and outclassed the inexperienced opponent in all areas of the game.
In first half, he remained close until 5-5 but then couple of fruitful rallies took him to dominating position of 8-5. He did not lose this rhythm and managed to place a respectable total of 11-9 before the interval.
After one-minute break, Fang Yang gathered some pace and caught his rival with 15-15 but he could not carry this momentum in final moments and faced a 16-21 defeat.
The Malaysian, currently placed at the 179th spot in world rankings, made amends in the very next game.
This time he played with the right attitude and did not remain under influence of his higher ranked challenger for long.
He matched his rival’s skills throughout the first half and managed to enter 11-9 total in score log. He doubled this lead by registering 16-11 in second half.
Misha Zilberman, who was also seeded nine in the event, could not come out of this deficit and surrendered after reading 13-21 score on the board.
The decider was full of sensation as the Israeli shuttler dominated first half of the set and placed a respectable total of 11-9.
However, Fang Yang changed the scenario in later part of the game and sealed a splendid victory with decisive figure of 21-15.
Now he is scheduled to meet Lino Munoz of Mexico in the second round of the US Open 2012.
