Fans concerned about New York Yankees’ low payroll – MLB News
New York Yankees are finding themselves in a very tough position these days after their owner Hal Steinbrenner decided to cut the payroll by $20 million over the next two years. Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman is also very concerned about the situation. In an interview with a leading sports website, the GM explained the problems the club might face in near future due to a lower payroll.
In the past, Cashman had never faced challenges regarding Yankees budget or finances but he will have to be smarter now to make the right decisions. The club has spent lavishly on its desired players this offseason. Signing on Michael Pineda, Phil Hughes and Ivan Nova, Cashman has strengthened Yankees pitching attack to help the ace C.C. Sabathia. A considerable amount of money was spent to make changes in batting lineup as well.
In some ways, this move to cut down the payroll can make Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman’s job a lot easier. The Yankees are considered to be the club with inherent financial advantage. Making the right choices can be difficult sometimes for the Manager and General Manager. However, with a lower payroll, Cashman will be looking to make minimal of changes on Yankees roster. Steinbrenner’s decision to cut down the payroll will also let the Yankees qualify for baseball’s $189 million tax-threshold.
“Our payroll doesn’t need to be at this level,” Cashman said. “It’s at a certain level because of massive commitments that we’ve already made, I think most of which have been very functional and good investments, and have been thus far. But at the same time, look at the Minnesota Twins, look at the Tampa Bay Rays, look at a lot of clubs that are having massive success going about it a different way.”
“Obviously we love what Robinson Cano does for us, we love what Curtis Granderson does for us,” Cashman further added.
Some of the Yankees fans, however, are very disappointed with owner’s decision. With such a low payroll, the club may not be able to compete with other strong teams. It will be interesting to see the consistency in Yankees’ performances in next few years.
