Fans demand subsides but pressure on Cleveland Browns QB Brandon Weeden to perform – NFL News
The demand from Cleveland Browns’ fans to replace rookie quarterback Brandon Weeden with former offence leader QB Colt McCoy has subsided to an extent but the pressure is still on the player to perform consistently well to bring the team out of the persistent
gloom.
Coach Pat Shurmur was under intense pressure from the team’s fans, who had demanded bringing back McCoy at Weeden’s place after the rookie found himself struggling to click to rhythm in the season opener.
At the end the coach’s decision to stick with Weeden as the starting quarterback paid him off in the second game when the player threw for 322 yards. It was his first display of his potential and skills.
The quarterback is nevertheless under consistent pressure to perform or else clear the way for McCoy, irrespective of the fact that the latter has failed the Browns more than the former, and there is no guarantee he will come back out on the field now again
with an improved form.
McCoy, as a matter of fact, had been given another opportunity in the last preseason game but failed to capitalise on it, and probably Shurmur is against the idea of trying him out on the line time and again with little hope of him being successful.
On the contrary, Shurmur has high hopes of Brandon. He has boasted the rookie’s impressive run in the last game and expects him to further improve during the rest of the season.
The coach’s stance makes sense that the rookie has played only a pair of games in the season and it will be rather unfair to discard him out straightaway. He certainly stands a potential of doing far better than McCoy if given as many games as a leader as
McCoy had been given.
A significant point to note is that Brandon has shown keenness to learn and improve, and the attitude has already paid him off to an extent. Some commentators believe he should be given more room and time to improve as there is no practical help available
for him to work out on his mistakes and rectify them. He must be able to develop his skills on his own.
