Formula 1 is the most watched motorsport in the world and it is every racing driver’s dream to compete in it one day. It is the most technical motorsport the world has to offer and it does not require just driving skills, instead,
it requires strategic planning, a set of good engineers, the best possible package and a team who can keep the momentum and perform consistently throughout the season.
The 2010 Formula 1 season was extremely dramatic and unpredictable as each and every race had an unexpected scenario in store for the teams and therefore, the results were completely surprising but entertaining at the same time.
As a result, the top 3 teams Red bull, Ferrari and McLaren were constantly on edge. The lead was shared amongst the top 5 drivers throughout the season and at first, it seemed that Lewis Hamilton will be the 2010 Drivers’ Champion since he led the title standings
by a reasonable margin until the season was half way through.
Ferrari seemed like the most unlikely team to secure the title but thanks to Felipe Massa’s help at the German Grand Prix, Ferrari was able to secure enough points to put Fernando Alonso in a comfortable position to actively compete
for the title and as a result, lead the classification for the last couple of races.
Red Bull on the other hand was not inconsistent at all as they were able to maintain their pace throughout the season and push McLaren and Ferrari to the limit every weekend. Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber enabled Red Bull to
win their first Constructors’ title a race before the grand finale before finally winning the Drivers’ title as well.
However, the only problem the fans still have with Formula 1 is the way some teams favour just one of their drivers while the other struggles to show his true pace throughout the season. This was witnessed during Michael Schumacher’s
5 year Championship reign when Ferrari favoured Michael over his teammate Rubens Barrichello and thanks to team orders, Rubens had to step out of Michael’s way enabling the German to secure maximum possible points for his title run, race after race.
Team orders were banned from the sport after Ferrari went too far but it seems that it is not too difficult to dodge the stewards and break this rule easily. Even though none of the team’s were being unjust to their drivers, the
fans still expect these drivers to win races and score points on their own rather than a spot fixed overtake.
Fernando Alonso took over Felipe Massa as a result of team orders at the German Grand Prix and Ferrari was fined for this act. However, one has to agree that Ferrari made the right choice since Felipe Massa was clearly nowhere
near the pace of the top 5 drivers and since he was in an almost impossible situation of winning the Drivers’ title from that position, the team made the right choice by at least keeping themselves alive in the title run.
Later on in the season, there were rumours that Red Bull was trying to secure Sebastian Vettel the Drivers’ title over Mark Webber keeping in mind Mark was in a much better situation than his teammate in terms of points. After
a number of press conferences and talks, Mark Webber still believes that the team was choosing Sebastian Vettel over him but the Australian wanted to keep his seat in the team for 2011 and hopefully defeat his teammate whether his team is with him or not.
Nevertheless, Formula 1 fans hope that the teams do not choose one of their drivers as their main ‘star’ of the show while keeping the other as his sidekick and race fairly.
