Fantastic four of the 2012 CEV Champions League Prelims – Women’s Tournament
The League Round of 2012 CEV Women’s Champions League reached its end on Tuesday, January 17.
At the end of the first round of European campaign following four teams came on top:
RC Cannes – France Fenerbahce Universal Istanbul – Turkey Rabita Baku – Azerbaijan Dinamo Kazan – Russia RC Cannes
The French RC Cannes displayed an incredible show of volleyball during the preliminaries of Champions League and topped the overall standings. The Cannes based team appeared in six matches and remained undefeated.
They bagged a total of 17 points and climbed up the top slot in Pool A. RC Cannes was the only team that covered the first round of the tournament without any loss. They were joined by Turkish Eczacibasi Vitra Istanbul, Italy’s MC-Carnaghi Villa Cortese,
and German Schweriner SC in the group.
The French ladies crossed their ways with all these teams but none of the pool members could halt the charged up Cannes squad from going on top. The game plan of Head Coach Yan Fang perfectly worked out and French team grabbed a lot of success. The team
will now be showing its mesmerising skills in the next round of Playoffs 12.
Fenerbahce Universal Istanbul
The ladies around experienced coach Jose Roberto Guimaraes started the campaign in Pool B along with teams from Azerbaijan, Germany, and France. Turkish team enjoyed a great rhythm and tone in the competition and completed the series of six matches with
final score of 5-1.
Fenerbahce finished the first three matches of the round in straight sets and created huge buzz on the centre court. However, they could not perform up to mark in the fourth match and dropped the decision in the favour of pool rival Azerbaijani Rabita Baku.
After the loss of one match, Turkish team got back on track and pulled off success in the last two matches of the league round. They secured a total of 15 points and got hold of the second slot in overall rankings.
Rabita Baku
The women’s top volleyball club team from Azerbaijan, Rabita Baku, showcased a consistent performance during the preliminaries and totalled 15 points in six matches. The Azerbaijani squad had a tough competition with Turkish Fenerbahce Universal in Pool
B of the 2012 CEV Champions League Prelims.
Both teams finished with similar 5-1 record but Turks moved to top position in the pool on account of slightly better win/loss ratio. Nevertheless, the feat of Rabita Baku was phenomenal and the team of Head Coach Zoran Gajic enjoyed huge spotlight. Rabita
Baku lost only one match to its biggest rival in the pool, the Fenerbahce.
Dinamo Kazan
Russia’s Dinamo Kazan was never behind in the game. They emerged as top team in the Pool C with a total of 14 points and overall settled for fourth position at the end of prelims. Kazan team pulled off success in five matches, while suffered the loss of
one game.
