Fantasy Drafts (auto vs. live)?

I have had a Private fantasy league now for 7 years. I am thinking about doing our first live draft. i know all the benefits, but what could be the con's for the commish?

Some of the cons of holding a live draft is that not every player will be able to make it to the draft. It's heaps fun if they all do though.

Just make sure everyone has pre-ranked their drafts before starting.

This is especially important when running a keeper league.

The other disadvantage I know is that it's difficult to get the exact time you want. This will need to be discussed with the members of your league.

Just make sure YOU are there and that you have no other commitments.

Having a live draft is the only way to conduct a fantasy sports league. Having an auto draft doesnt allow you to personalize your team. If it's a baseball draft then you could choose wether you want a power team with HR hitters or you could go for a High BA. team. With a live draft you can use your knowledge of the sport to your advantage.

If this is a private league and you know all the participants, a live draft is a lot a fun.  The only down sides are it does take a lot of time.  That is up to you if you want to be in the room with all these people for a full afternoon ( or whenever you do it).  I am sure that everyone has some friends that they can stand more that others.  

If everyone cannot be in the same room at the same time and one or two people have to phone in the draft or use instant messenger to make picks that can add to the time.  It is harder to enforce a time limit for picking when you are all together.  We have also used different methods of keeping track of the picks including excel projected onto a TV.  Then as the commish, if it was a live offline draft you have to enter all of the teams later.  That is about it.  It is a great time if you decide tot do it, just leave plenty of time for the draft and be ready to set the teams after.
