Hi,

I am starting a new bi-weekly column for a webiste that I write for - www.unlimitedfightnews.com - where I will take two fighters from different eras and match them up against each other. Analyzing their strengths and weaknesses, along with their boxing style, I will come up with a result. My first installment is slated to be released on Monday, June 15 and will pit (in their primes) Joe Frazier vs Mike Tyson. Any suggestions on that one? Any other fights you would like to see for future installments? Here are ones that I am considering:

Welterweight – Miguel Cotto vs Felix Trinidad

Middleweight – Bernard Hopkins vs Carlos Monzon

Welterweight – Sugar Ray Leonard vs Floyd Mayweather

Middleweight – Sugar Ray Robinson vs Roy Jones Jr

Junior Welterweight - Aaron Pryor vs Julio Cesar Chavez

Lightweight - Roberto Duran vs Hector Camacho

  1. Tyson vs Frasier- I think Tyson is such a bad match up for frasier! I think he blows him away in a round or 2. tko

Cotto vs Trinidad... This fight depends on one thing... If Cotto knows about the De La Hoya fight! Because with that strategy it seems like any very good fighter can beat Tito. So I like Cotto by decision.

Hopkins vs Monzon- Monzon was a beast! The man is so underrated! He was like a bigger version of Pryor! Having said that I think he wears down Hopkins and takes a decision in a close fight.

Robinson vs Jones jr- I think Jones jr. was a bit faster at middleweight, but I still think that sooner or later Robinson will catch him and break Jones jr's glass jaw in a come from behid thriller!! ko in the 11th!!!

Pryor vs Chavez- I take Chavez in a battle of wills! (as long as no suspiciously taped up bottle is allowed!!) I think what makes the difference is that in his prime Chavez had one of the best chins ever! He was probably as strong as Pryor and maybe even stronger! I just don't see Pryor beating a man who won his first 87 fights!

Duran vs Camacho- Duran!! at lightweight Duran was king nobody is even close! The man when he was passed his prime was still able to go up to middleweight and cause some noise!

  2. i would love to see Thomas Hearns vs Felix Trinidad at welterweight, and... Evander Holyfeild   vs Joe Louis at heavyweight.  also, many may disagree but i think Tyson would ko Frazier within 5 rounds.

  3. First of all, it's blasphemous to mention the great Sugar Ray Robinson with sorry *** Roy Jones, jr.  if they were contemporaries that fight would never have happened, because Roy Jones, jr would have dodged him.

Cotto could probably take Tito as is, i say as is because i don't think we've seen Cotto's best yet, but tito could never take a good punch and Cotto has a lot of power.

I would take Hopkins in his prime over anybody in that class

    Chavez over the Hawk

    Duran over Camacho

here's my dream fight if both boxers were in their prime:

De La Hoya v. Julio Cesar Chavez

unfortunately when these fights happened only one of the fighters was in his prime

  4. Rocky Marciano  vs  Mike Tyson! that has always been my dream fight.

  5. Frazier vs. Tyson - of all the fights on you list, as funny as it sounds, this might actually be the easiest to call.  I've read a few of your other answers, so I know you know boxing.  Frazier did not have much, if any defense. He just walked right in, with little or no head and body movement. Against a prime Tyson, that's suicide.  Tyson is the hardest puncher to put on gloves, period. Remember what happened when Joe fought Foreman and didnt move his head? This is no different.

    Tyson by KO1 or 2

Cotto vs. Trinidad - this one might actually be the hardest one to pick.  Cotto gets hit so much, just to get his off, you wonder how many of Tito shots he can take.  He proved his chin somewhat against Mosely, who also hits a ton. Tito's chin, on the other hand, is suspect.  And he's not overly fast, more of a steady moving stalker, who takes a few rounds to really find the mark.  You saw when Oscar boxed his ears off the first 6 rounds of that fight.  But, never forget, is his prime he mowed down whoever was put in front of him(including a sad but thorough beatdown of Sweet P, man was that ugly).  It would be a test of which happened first, Cotto going down from punch accumulation, or Tito getting caught.

    Tito TKO10

Hopkins vs. Monzon - Gotta go with B-Hop here.  He would have frustrated Monzon with all his tactics, holding behind the head, low blows. By the end, Monzon would be so drained he wouldn't be able to hold Hopkins off

    B-Hop KO12

Leonard vs. Mayweather - I hate to say this, Leonard wins here. Every bit as fast, slick and good at controlling the ring as Floyd, but with more pop.  Also, the caliber of comp he beat at so many weight classes, in so many different ways, showed his amazing ability

    Leonard W12 unanimous

Robinson vs. Jones Jr - Now this.... two of the top 5 greatest fighters of any size and any era....WOW. at 160, this is the fight of all history. at 168 or 175, forget it. Jones is too big, too fast, too strong, too athletic.  The deciding factor? In their primes, Robinson was able to be knocked out, and was more than once, Jones wasnt even able to be hit.

    Jones KO5

Pryor vs. Chavez Sr. - Both fighters known for their enormous heart.. but Pryor is, was, and always will be the best little man fighter ever.

    Pryor W12 Unanimous

Duran vs. Camacho - This one is also pretty easy to call. Camacho was a good fighter. not great, but a good, solid fighter.  But Duran? At this weight? Many people only remember his second and third fights with Leonard.  But never forget, this was Duran's best weight, and the weight he BEAT Leonard at.  Trust me, they didnt call him "little hands of stone" for nothing

    Duran TKO 4

P.S. how bout this one at middleweight - B-Hop vs. Marvin Hagler?

  6. Tyson was nothing but a bully, even in his prime. He never beat a real top fighter.

Frazier would have steamrolled him. Tyson would be out of heart by round three.

  7. I always thought that if mike tyson watched more joe frazier fights he could have been the best h/w ever. I dont agree that frazier had no defence Because he constantly was bobbing and weaving. Joe fraziers only losses were to ali and foreman. A pretty good career. But if Frazier could be hit by a slow george foreman. He would be quickly koed by a much faster mike tyson. People often underestimate how much hand speed he had. I personaly would have loved to see a joe frazier and ken norton fight.

  8. Frazier vs Tyson, if Frazier gets past the 5th rd, he wins. to much heart and determination for Tyson. As Ali said Frazier is very difficult to hit with a clean shot! His head was constantly moving but he was Ko'd by Foreman and Tyson had similar power with more speed.

Trinidad at this point has accomplished more and is more of a proven fighter.

Monzon! He is in the top 2 or 3 in the middleweight division! BHop is a step below that.

Leonard, No question! He owns wins against Hagler, Hearns, Duran and Benitez. Floyd only owns a win over an older De la Hoya.

I'm a big fan of RJJ but SRR was the greatest P4P ever. If you don't know that get films of the man and get an education. 133-1 in his prime years!!!!

I like Pryor but Arguello was getting to him in that 1st fight until the "magic bottle" incident. Chavez was stronger than Arguello. I'll take Chavez in a exciting brawl!

    Camacho wasn't in Duran's league!!

  9. frazier over tyson

    tito over cotto

    leonard over pbf

early 50s sugar ray over jones jr, but roy over a  mid to late 50s sugar man

    monzon over b-hop

    chavez over pryor

    duran over camacho

    --------------------------------------...

    others to consider could be

azumah nelson vs brian mitchel / barry mc guigan / alexis arguello / eusebio pedrosa / j c chavez / antonio esparragosa.

    eder jofre vs khaosai galaxy

    gene tunney vs ezzard charles

    bob foster vs michael spinks

j c chavez vs nicolino locche

    ray leonard vs charley burley

  10. So you want to take our opinions and make them your own?? I can save you some time, I already did that with allot of fights, some of the ones you mentioned.

Taking their reach,height,weight,strengths,weakness's... style, aggression and passiveness into account. I even got down to giving points for certain category's like jabs, hooks, power, speed, agility. Once i got my results I discussed it with several trainers and fighters, me and my friend studied hours of tapes on each fight.

Once we got the result, we would put it into effect in fight night and we would each fight like the fighters we were using, mimicking their style to see if we get the same outcome as on paper.

In almost every fight it came out as we predicted so we know we must have been pretty close.

The one that you have up there Leonard-Mayweather, on paper we had Leonard winning by Ko late rounds, but in the game Mayweather won a decision.

The ones we did that you have listed

Robinson vs Jones, on paper we had Jones winning by close decision (power shots being the determining factor) In the game Jones Ko'd Robinson in the 11th. (the game is not made to have fights go that long though anyways, its more for fun)

Cotto - Trinidad we did, and in both Cotto Knocked Tito out in 8 rounds.

Before we did our research on Tyson-Frazier I had Frazier to win in 10, but when we actually looked at everything, we had Tyson Knocking Frazier out in the 5th round. Tyson being just to fast for Smokin Joe and throwing too many combos.

And in the end? it didn't really matter, you can do all the research you want its still just your opinion.

  11. Muhammed Ali vs. Lenox Luis- I would pay to see that on PPV

  12. Dreamfight:  Mike Tyson vs Million Dollar Baby

(Tyson in his pre-prison prime, and Million Dollar Baby at her not-yet-crippled best)

  13. Ali vs Tyson

  14. Ya definitely Rocky Marciano vs Lennox Lewis...would call it. " the immovable object meets the unstoppable force".

How about Alexis Arguello vs Roberto Duran at lightweight...that would be something.

Sugar Ray vs Sugar shane in prime at welter.

Pacquiao vs Azumah Nelson battle of the little men.

Marvin Hagler vs Roy Jones at super middleweight in their prime.

Dude I can go on and on....LOL

  15. CARLOS MONZON OVER Bernard Hopkins  WITH Hopkins HOLDING THE WHOLE FIGHT,Felix Trinidad OVER Miguel COTTO BY KO IN THE 10TH ROUND,sugar Ray Leonard OVER MATWEATHER BY KO IN THE 9TH ROUND Mayweather has to open up and gets caught with a left hook, Roy Jones Jr. over Sugar Ray Robinson in the 6th round Robinson does not respect Jones power and gets caught with a 4 punch combo and Roy finishes him after the ref gives Robinson one last chance this is a great fight up until the ending,Aaron Pryor over Chavez by KO in the 12th round this is a blood bath but the Hawk will not be denied, This is the easiest fight to pick Roberto Duran over Camacho in a 12 round decision Camacho is too cautious, But the fight I would die to see would be Ali V. Lenox Lewis this would be a great fight with Ali KO Lewis in the 10th round Ali has to much speed and movement for Lewis and Ali would catch Lewis coming in and going out all night Ali jab would be the difference great fights guys keep up the good work
