Question:

Fantasy Football 2008 Rookie RBs

I am in a 10 person keepers league, it's been going on for about 10 years now. Every year we keep 10 guys and draft five. This season I have the 5th and 6th overall picks in the first round. The guy drafting first already said he is taking McFadden, this leaves 3 spots before I get my first selection...

I'm pretty sure J. Stewart will be selected, so I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on who else to pick - who looks good. My team is very competitive (Addai, T.O., E. Manning, Shockey, Wes Welker, Maroney) but I need a few picks to solidify my team.

Any suggestions? Keep in mind, if every team is keeping 10, the top 100 (excluding rookies) will be taken. Thanks!

  1. You say you want rookie RB's?  Look no further than Kevin Smith of the Detroit Lions.  Tatum Bell is a useless piece of junk who can't carry the ball more than 15 times a game when healthy.  He will get hurt right away or at some point, and it already looks like Marinelli will give Kevin Smith the bulk of the carries right away.

Smith was a stat macchine in college (look up his numbers at Central Florida), and he proved his durability as a workhorse by carrying the ball 25 times per game and suffering no significant injuries.  He comes to the NFL with the body you would expect from somebody who hopes to succeed as a professional RB.

My other suggestion would be Rashad Mendenhall, but he's still got a really good player (Willie Parker) in front of him and might not ever measure up physically as a full-time starting RB in the league.  Kevin Smith will help you now and later, and we are talking about the most important position to have depth at.

    That's my two cents.

  2. ok people think i am crazy about this guy but the ravens have decided that Ray Rice will be a solid backup. Right now they are comparing him to a Jones-Drew and that he will get a good look down neer the goaline he is a guy that manny people are not looking at you could probably get him in your last spot. Trust me this guy is ganna be good. Each day it seems like he will have a bigger role because of his offseason and how hard he is working. I believe he can be a steal and a guy you can keep as he blossems into a starter.

  3. Take a look at Ray Rice in the ravens pre-season opener,ESPN reports that he will start and get most of the work at (RB)

  4. Well its really hard to tell since we dont know who you have but heres some suggestion

-If your want depth at QB the Aron Rodgers will be a nice choice

-If your want depth at WR theres some could slepers like Burelson and Ted Ginn Junior(who wouldd be great if Tampa can get favre)

-Stewart will be a great choice but if mcfadden was offered to you i wouldn't take him. He has a really weak O-Line

    rookie backs

-Felix jones (DAL). They lost Julius Jones so he might get alot of carries

    -Rashard Mendenhall (PIT)

  5. I think, long term, for a keeper league, Mendenhall will be a beast.  He's behind Parker now, so not much immediate returns (though he may vulture TD's immediately).  Two years from now, he could be a 1,300 yd TD machine.

  6. As for rookie RBs, look no further than to the "Denver" system.  I was very high on Ryan Torrian (RB DEN) as a very late round wild card, but  unfortunately he broke his arm today and is out 6 - 8 weeks.  He is a name to keep in mind, but not for your draft.

As for other rookie RBs, I would also consider Steve Slaton in HOU.  Kubiak brought the Denver running system to him to Houston, and he just added grand-guru offensive line coach Alex Gibbs in the off-season.  Gibbs will make this unit run, and run very, very well (Gibbs made DEN dominant in the late 90's and ATL dominant in the mid 2000's).  Slaton is used to the one-cut and done style used by the Denver system having run it in college at West Virginia.  With a host of injury prone backs ahead of him (Green and Brown), a very late round Slaton lottery ticket isn't necessarily a bad idea.
