Question:

Fantasy Football: Who to target in draft?

Alright, this is a lot of info to throw at y'all, but any suggestions would be appreciated. I'm joining a fantasy football league for the first time this year, and some expert (semi-expert, or just good hunches) advice about the draft would be great!

I'm in a 14-team league, and I have the 7th pick overall. There are also some players unavailable due to being keepers (i.e. Barber, Gore, R. Grant, Romo, D. Anderson, Roethlisburger, are among the biggest names).

This means I have picks #7, 21, 35, 49, 63, 77, 91, etc....

I'm thinking I will draft RB-RB, QB, WR, WR, etc...

Who would you target at these spots, and who might be available? I'm thinking I will target M. Lynch with first pick, mainly becasue Portis seems injury prone to me.

Any other draft strategy you'd suggest?

Thanks!

  1. At the 7th spot Don't be afraid to take a WR (if you are in a points per reception league) if Moss is available, there are actually alot of RB's this year but only 4 or 5 stand out receivers, your obviously not going to get any top RB's same w/QB's, only 3-4 great QB's, get someone you know is going to do good everyweek,,

STAY AWAY FROM : L. Maroney, L Johnson, W McGahee,  R. Brown, Chad Johnson,

SLEEPERS, for later rounds that you will need w/14 teams

Chris Johnson, James Hardy, Johnathan Stewart, R. Mendenhall, K. Jones,

Also make sure to get a good TE, there are only a handful that will get you good points, good TE's will get you 20 points a week, a bad one will get you 8 pts. You don't want this

  2. It's amazing to me that the highest rated keepers are Barber+Gore.

This will bode well for you in the 1st round.Don't blindly take Lynch

if Moss,or Brady are starring at you.(They'd both be better values then Lynch.)This is how the 1st round should go (minus the keepers)

    1)LT

    2)AP

    3)Westbrook

    4)Addai

5)S.Jackson (last of the top tier RBs)

    6)Brady (LT of QBs.)

    7)Moss

    8)Portis

    9)Lynch

    10)McGahee

    11)TO

    12)L.Johnson (Over Rated)

    13)R.Wayne

    14)P.Manning

Here's some possible picks in the ensuing rounds..

    round 2)Braylon Edwards,Jamal Lewis+B.Jacobs(nice RBs),Fitzgerald

    round 3)Plaxico,R.Bush,E.Grahm,BreesD.McFadden

round 4)Witten (Best TE) S.Holmes,J.Stewart (nice RB)

    C.Palmer(nice value),Greg Jennings(WR)

    round 5)Selvin Young,D.McNabb,Calvin Johnson,Lendale White,Dallas Clark,C.Cooley

round 6)M.Hasselbeck,L.Coles(sleeper with new QB Favre)M.Bulger, Chester Taylor,Donald Driver

    round 7)Anthony Gonzalez(WR)Vernon Davis(TE)Minnesota,San Diego,Garard,J.Cutler,Eli Manning,J.Shockey,J.Cotchery(nice WR)

    J.Galloway

The rest of the draft should be a kicker, back ups,and possibly a DEF.

  3. i'd go rb,wr,rb,wr,qb,wr,te then defense or kicker

  4. As with the NFL draft, the best strategy is to take whoever is the best player on the board when your pick comes up.

While an RB is usually the first choice for a position player in a fantasy draft, by the time you get to the middle picks, you may end up having to choose a back who's in a by-committee situation. I agree with your assessment of Portis and, if Lynch is available, I would take him over Portis.

But, also consider that the top fantasy point scorers last year - outside of the top 5 or so RBs - were the elite QBs and WRs. Also, consider the drop-off in QBs and WRs from #7 to #21, versus the drop-off in RBs. You may not be losing that much, with the likes of Willie Parker, Maurice Jones-Drew, or Brandon Jacobs probably still being around at pick #21. But, the top 5 QBs and WRs will probably be gone.

With that #7 pick, I would assume Tom Brady would be gone. So, that would leave Peyton Manning, Tony Romo, and Drew Brees as probably available. And, maybe Randy Moss would be gone. But, that leaves Terrell Owens, Reggie Wayne, Braylon Edwards, and Larry Fitzgerald.

If you can't get a top-5 stud at RB in the first round, at least get a stud at another high-production position. Make that first pick really count for you this year and consider grabbing an elite QB. At pick #21, then start looking at your #1 RB, or even a stud WR.

  6. Get Lynch, Moss, or Owens first.  If you do get lynch pick up Fred Jackson in a late round, thats who'll be spiltting carries w/ him this year

  7. id actually take portis over lynch, but its up to you. At pick 21 id be looking for braylon edwards, andre johnson or larry fitzgerald. Id take one of these guys over the rb's likely to be seen at that time like jacobs or maroney. 35 id look for micheal turner an rb. Then at 49 look for carson palmer. At 63 get another wr like dwayne bowe, roddy white, or hines ward. 77 get the best tight end still there. There are plentyof decent tight ends this year so you can wait on them. The rest is up to you. So heres what your roster might look like

    QB Palmer

    Rb Portis

    Rb Turner

    Wr Edwards

    Wr Bowe

    TE (Miller, Scheffler, Davis, Shockey)
