Fantasy Football: Why Do people fail to draft backup TEs, Ds, and Kickers?

I mean shoot, I could never see the sense in having a half dozen RBs or WRs. Plus, sometimes I'll try to grab 3 Kickers after the 10th round just to leave a buch of c**p for the other 9 guys waiting until the final round. There is a 40 to 50 point swing between the top 4 and numbers 10-13.

  1. in short, because you always have a scrub laying around that you can drop for a bye week. if you wasted a spot or 2 on an extra kicker, another on a backup TE or D & your RB goes down, the other is on bye week... you are screwed fishing for a replacement in week 6. anyone that can help you win is sitting on someone else's team & you are forced to trade a stud at another position just to compete.

or you could just quit like most of the other people do, s******g up the balance of the league.

  2. Because every single year a new kicker goes on a hot streak so there is always a solid kicker available, last year Bironas was a free agent in 65% of Yahoo leagues starting the season and became a must have. The year before it was Rackers. Last year 10 kickers scored over 130 points with Crosby leading the way at 156 and only Bironas at 150 so I dont get the 40 point swing theory. There were 16 kickers who scored at least 124 points and ony 5 who hit 140 (a max. 16 point difference, a whopping 1 point per game but most were in the 130 range....a difference of less that 1 point per, only a 2 point per game swing from the very best to the 16th best). Now factor in different offenses (who by the way dictate how many points a kicker will ultimately score) and there are another 5 or 6 breakout candidates. Same issue with TEs. A quick look at the available free agents in the 6 leagues I am in and I have at least 6 solid backup options available to me via free agency in every single one of those leagues (including an expert league). Good fantasy players will grab a defense (ideally in round 8) but there is a big dropoff from the elite to the average. I always draft 4 to 5 RBs, once the RBs are gone there is little to nothing left in free agency and now I have big time depth to trade to a guy with RB depth problems once one of his guys gets hurt....if you cant start 2 very good backs in most fantasy formats your fantasy season is doomed. Same with WR, there is rarely ever a surprise breakout WR available in free agency so the guys who drafted depth have a major advantage in any trade, they dont have to deal any of those guys (if they sit on my bench they cant hurt me in a matchup and they cant help you). I never, never, never ever pick a kicker before the last round and I almost never end up with the same kicker that I drafted and yet every league I am in contention for the title (good draft strategy and playing best matchups require hard work but it pays off). While you are drafting 3 kickers other guys are grabbing up breakout candidates like Mendenhall, Ginn, Bryant Johnson, Matt Schuab, Julius Jones, Ricky Williams, Algae Crumpler, DeAngelo Williams, etc., etc. etc.. By the way here is the kickers I have gotten in the last round so far this year ...Crosby (lots of FGs last year, can Rodgers get them in the end zone more than Favre did? Favre obviously wasnt great at it based on Crosbys numbers and supposedly he is the better QB)., Bironas (you seen the numbers), and Dawson (I think the Browns can move the ball a little bit, points shouldnt be a problem). Rethink your strategy, depth at the high scoring positions where the dropoff is tremendous is far more important than stopping someone from getting a certain kicker is crazy....I'll give up the extra point or 2 from my kicker to have a deep RB team (and keep good scorers from guys with kicking depth).

  3. Because mostly All TE, K, DEF all have 200 points or less. I believe you should fill up your roster Including TE and then get 1 or 2 BN players and then draft a DEF. The top 10 defenses are not really far from each other and getting the 8th ranked defense  instead of 1st and getting rid of 25 points but gaining a nate burleson or a ronnie brown etc. incase your starters get injuried you will have a strong replaceement and carry on your position. Also, you might strong backups for rb and wr and you could switch players depending on matchups. And some backups can explode and take one of your stsarting jobs. Some backups are projected 7-10 points per week while kickers will get 6. and getting a 10th ranked kicker maybe 5 points. so your only loosing out on a point a week.  Sorry for the longness of it. Hope it helped
