Fantasy Premier League: The Team of Gameweek 3 – Tim Howard, Martin Skrtel – Part 1
After another exhilarating, dramatic and somewhat shocking weekend of glorious footballing action took place in Gameweek 3 of the English Premier League and with the dust beginning to settle, one can take a look at how all the action has affected bragging
rights in the Fantasy Premier League.
Starting things off, as is usually done in football, at the back.
Goalkeepers
There were plenty of point-earning goal keepers over the weekend even though there were not as many clean sheets. Yet, penalty saves, blocking shots and parries made up for more than a few of the brave men between the sticks.
Goal Keeper
Tim Howard (Everton): The shining star among keepers this weekend, Howard showed that high transfer prices do not automatically guarantee more points. Raking in an impressive 12 points in dramatic fashion, Howard is the goalkeeper of the
week in the Fantasy Premier League.
Making four saves, with one point earned for every three saves, keeping a clean sheet (worth another 4 points) and saving a penalty for a 5 point bonus, the Everton goalkeeper was the man to have in goal for managers this weekend.
Expect the American’s transfer value to go up from 5.5-million over the coming few weeks.
Defenders
Emmerson Boyce (Wigan Athletic)
Wigan has earned a reputation for having players on their squad who earn plenty of Fantasy points for their managers. Charles N’Zogbia and Paul Scharner are a few notable examples, as both would earn masses of points over the course of the season.
It seems Emmerson Boyce is now joining that category as the 4.5-million priced Wigan defender earned an impressive 9 points over the weekend.
Keeping a clean sheet for the standard 4 points and setting up one of the Wigan goals for another 3 points (assist), Boyce is the top scoring defender in Gameweek 3.
Martin Skrtel (Liverpool)
Liverpool were fantastic over the weekend, playing some truly beautiful football, yet while the entire team may have played well, not many returned dividends in the form of points for their managers. With the exception of the Slovakian hard-man Martin Skrtel.
Coming on as a substitute in the first half after an injury to the right back, Martin Kelly, Skrtel had a job to do settling in quickly. Luckily for the Reds, he did just that, and with the second half still young, he managed to find himself just enough
space in Bolton’s penalty area to power home a header into the back of the net for a massive 6 points.
Add in the 2 point bonus for his performance and the 61 minutes played, Skrtel walked away with 10 points, though it could have so easily have been 14, had the defence not conceded that late goal.
In fact, Liverpool’s defence has not been the same in terms of clean sheets, as it was during former manager, Rafael Benitez’s reign, though the fact that Skrtel has been able to justify his lofty 6-million price tag, for this gameweek at least, means that
there is still some benefit in having a Red in one’s fantasy team’s defence.
