Fantasy football: Top Sleepers

The Premier League season starts next weekend and that can only mean one thing: yes fantasy football starts once again.

All over the country people are worrying, shaking with fear and losing sleep over who they should pick, who is going to be a bargain and who will be worth those precious double points as captain. Friends will go head-to-head against one another, colleagues will play for title of office bragging rights and family members will fall out with each other. But when it comes down to it, we all love fantasy football.

If you’re struggling to pick your team and you just can’t seem to find those bargains here are some players who might have gone under your radar.

Rafael, Manchester United - £6million

If the Community Shield is anything to go by, Manchester United will be the team to beat in the Premier League this season and they will be strong. They dominated Chelsea – last season’s champions – and with Newcastle at home on their opening day a clean sheet looks like a certainty. For two years now Rafael has been looking like he is United’s right-back of the future and now is the time for him to step up. His competition is Gary Neville and John O’Shea – not exactly world-class players. He should be United’s No.1 choice at right-back and for £6million he could be the defender bargain of the season.

Martin Petrov, Bolton Wanderers - £6million

If you’re looking for an attacking midfielder that has loads of talent and will start every week, Martin Petrov is your man. At £6million he could be the bargain of the year for your team. Even at 31 he’s one of the better players in the league and he is Bolton’s most talented player this season. He showed glimpse’s of what he can do for Manchester City and with the opportunity of a full season under his belt you could be looking at 10 goals and a good number of assists from Petrov.

Alberto Aquilani, Liverpool - £ 7.5million

As a fantasy sleeper the Italian fits the bill. He is very talented and because he didn’t adapt as well as he should have last season because of an ankle injury - which forced him to miss the start of last season – everyone will overlook him. He’s owned by just 1.1% of all teams and if Roy Hodgson decides to start him (which he should) you could be reaping the benefits. He’s a great passer with great vision and with Fernando Torres up front the assists could be rolling in.

David Dunn, Blackburn - £6.5million

The best player on a mediocre team is normally a recipe for a pretty good fantasy season. He’ll be at the heart of everything good for Rovers and he can grab you a few goals. If you haven’t watched him play, rest assured that he will be pulling the strings for Sam Allardyce’s team. Only owned by 2.9% of teams, Dunn could push you to the top of your league.
Philippe Senderos, Fulham - £4.5million

What a steal at £4.5million. If Mark Hughes can continue the good work Roy Hodgson started, Senderos could be racking up those clean sheet points. Consider that if he does start he’ll be partnered by Brede Hangeland in defence. That partnership could be hard to break down at Craven Cottage and he is a threat from set pieces. If Mark Schwarzer remains with Fulham, they could be the team with the most clean-sheets outside the top four.
