Question:

Fantasy football keeper rule?

We're heading into the third season of a fantasy football league. Each team can keep up to three players from last season. One owner has asked if he doesn't want to keep three what happens to his other roster spots. Would you recommend allowing his extra picks at the top of the draft or after all other picks?

  1. usually in keeper leagues eaither they make u keep them.or. u give up picks by chosing to keep a player. with my league i hav 1 keeper and if u want to keep thats ur first round draft pick.

  2. Hi HH,

I wouldn't start adding funky rules on how to 'trade-in' keepers that you don't want.  Like others have said the best course of action is to either:

    1) Force all owners to keep the minimum number of declared keepers

    2) Allow owners to keep as many players as they want, up to the keeper maximum, but they do not get any compensation for keepers that they don't claim.  They would get an extra pick at the end of the draft to fill-out their roster, but that's it.

We faced a similar situation in my keeper league 2 years so.  To alleviate the problem, we simply reduced the number of keepers down to 2.  This had a dual effect:

    1) Every team can always find 2 keepers as everyone has at least a decent RB and WR.

    2) It made the draft more exciting because there were more players available (12 more, to be exact, but 12 good players).

When in doubt, keep it simple.  Hope this helps.

  3. Most keeper leagues say that you have to keep a certain amount no matter what. If anything i would give him at best a mid round pick or late.

  4. The problem is the phrase "up to." I have played in several keeper leagues. The number of keepers was always established ahead of time. I'm assuming that you draft in inverse order of the prior year finish so that gives the poorer teams a help.

My recommendation would be to keep the three. The owner can then drop and pick up after the draft. This is the same as giving him a pick at the end. A choice at any other juncture is shorting the other managers.

    Good luck. Have fun.
