Fantasy football - when should I pick which positions?

Okay you've probably seen half a dozen (or a half a thousand) of these types of questions before but I prefer personalized results.

I'm in a fantasy football league where you must draft 2 QB, 3 RB, 3 WR, 2 TE, 2K, and 2 DEF. You play all but one in each position. I won't figure out my picking position until the day of. Its your standard serpentine draft (1-10; 10-1; etc).

I know you can't always predict your entire pick schedule because you won't know who is available in each round come time to pick. However I'm kind of new to the whole fantasy football scene and I would prefer not to go into this season blind asside from the cheat sheet books that any average joe can pick up on their way home from work.

Points are pretty standard:

Offense

4 point passing touchdown (6 for 40+ yard, 8 for 80+ yard,)

1 point per 20 passing yards

-2 points for interception

1 point per 10 yards rushing/receiving

6 point rushing/receiving touchdown (8 for 40+; 10 for 80+)

3 points for field goal (4 for 40+; 6 for 50+)

1 point for extra point

2 points for a 2 point conversion

6 points for a kickoff/punt return TD

Defense

6 points for a blocked extra point

6 points for defensive touchdown

1 point for fumble recovery

2 points for an interception

2 points for a sack

4 points for a safety

10 points for a defensive shutout

Now that you have way more information than you need, I would really appreciate an answer ASAP.

  1. I participate in Fantasy Football every year with friends for about a $500 to $1000 pot. You think I would watch a lot of ESPN and buy all the books, but I dont think they are that neccessary if you are a football fan. You get stats and fun facts but you never know what is going to happen anyway. To answer your question....your very first pick should always be a quarterback or running back. I say "or" because if you are the fourth pick and everyone chose a QB but a powerful running back like LaDanian Tomlinson is available, you should choose him because Im sure by that time Brady and Manning are gone. The reason you want a QB or running back first is because you get points for each TD's and yards gained. A QB scores you points for the TD's he throws and how many yards he has each game. QB's and running backs usually have the most yards and the most TD's each game statistically. Im sure everyone is going to give you the same answer but this draft will be hard because the QB situation everywhere is shaky except Manning, Brady and Romo of course. But a good solid QB who will play every Sunday and a running back who gets a lot of carries will be the main factors that keep you from getting your butt kicked each week.

  2. pick up any position that your the best at and the funnest one

    enjoy

  3. The following draft order is what has worked best for me over the last few years. It changes somewhat depending on the kind of league it is but this is a pretty standard order.   I have participated in several different FFL and most have similiar rules and point standards.  However, they all differ somewhat.  In my opinion, the serpentine draft is best way to go.  At least, I it is the one I prefer. And the keeper leagues are fun and you learn alot.  Remember, once you draft and the season has begun watch the waiver line and pay attention to what it is telling you.  You will form your own opinion on who's hot and who's not but keep an open mind and don't be afraid to take chances on the rookies.  Especially in the draft, if you have done a little research you will have a good idea of what rookies to take a chance on.  My suggestion, especially if you are playing in a keeper league, pick your first choice of a rookie in what ever round that is no matter the position.

    Draft Order:

    RB

    RB

    QB

    WR

    WR

    TE

    K

    DEF

    QB

    RB

    TE

    WR

    DEF

    K
