Question:

Fareham to Cardiff sept13/14: is there a cheaper way?

I need to get to Cardiff from Fareham, Hampshire, travelling Saturday 13th and returning Sunday 14th. National express coaches take seven hours and go via heathrow(!). There are no flights to cardiff from Southampton. The train takes 3 to 4 hours with changes but will cost £61! Does anyone have any tips for getting there in a reasonably direct manner at a lower cost? I can't face driving as motorways freak me out.

  1. Unfortunately you are travelling when the main direct route is closed for scheduled track replacement and the journey planner is automatically directing you via a longer route.

However, I've checked and there is a cheaper way! The track is being repaired between Salisbury and Warminster - soooo go onto the National rail website www.nationalrail.co.uk and get a ticket from Fareham to Salisbury (return fare shows as £17.00). Then get another ticket from Salisbury to Cardiff - although this will actually mean transferring to a bus to Warminster and getting the train from there (return fare shows as £17.00 again).

Often the fare from A to B via C is more than the sum of A to B then B to C!! Daft isn't it?

    Hope it helps.

This gives a total cost of £34.00
