I work at a preschool and we are learning about farms next week. Do you have any good ideas for games? Something for about 20 kids, and not to complicated?

  1. QUACK GAME

Everyone stands feet slightly apart, hands on knees or ankles, looking back through their legs. Then they start moving backwards.

.....Play the "FARMER SAYS”…Instead of "Simon Says"

.....Play PIN THE TAIL ON THE DONKEY

OR other versions such as: Pin the Tail on the Cow, Pin the Comb on the Rooster, Put the Hat on the Farmer, Put the Tire on the Tractor or Pin the Tail on the Piggy, etc.

.....Play "Duck, Duck, Goose"or other versions such as---Chick, Chick, Rooster, or Pig, Pig, Piglet, etc.

....TREAURE HUNT: Place a hay bale inside a plastic swimming pool and pull the hay apart; hide treasures inside the bale. (watch for asthma and allergies)

    DUCK WALK RACE

Have children line up at the Start Line, squat down and grasp their ankles with each hand from behind. On GO, they waddle to a designated Finish Line. They can't let go of their ankles or they’re disqualified. The first child over the Finish Line is the winner... (This would be fun to play with "waddle music" :-)

    Be sure to take pictures!!!

.....Sing ‘OLD MCDONALD HAD A FARM, complete with very loud sound effects. Each child or section can be given a different animal to act out.

.....PLAY "HOP BUNNY HOP": All the bunnies hop around until the word ‘HAWK’ is called out. Children then must all stand very still so that they do not get caught. (Music can also be combined with this---when the music stops "HAWK" is called out!

    DO THE CHICKEN POKEY DANCE

    Sung to: "Hokey Pokey"

You put your RIGHT WING IN (put right fist under right arm-pit)

You take your right wing out…

You put your right wing in….

And you shake it all about.

    You do the Bunny Pokey

    And STRUT yourself around,

    That's what it's all about!

    .........Choice of additional verses:

"You put your left wing in…

You put your chicken leg in…

You put your chicken beak in

    PARACHUTE PLAY With FARM ANIMALS...

... Gather the children form a circle around the parachute. Hold the edges and work together to move it up and down. Once the children get the hang of it, allow a few children at a time, to go under the chute…. Then put a stuffed cow, duck, horse, etc., in the center and make then hop and jump as well.

These are all from the "Farm Theme" at After-School-Care.com http://www.after-school-care.com/Replies...

  2. sound lotto. for smaller groups. and you could do a game where you have lots of farm animal toys in a box under a cloth and then you show them part of the animal and they have to guess what farm animal it is. but ask them to put their hands up else it goes crazy. :-P. (i know that from experience :-P) and if they get it right they can come and get the animal and then sit back down. gives them something to work for. so make sure theres enough for one for each child. even if you have more than one cow or whatever. have fun :-)

  3. Farmer in the Dell

    Old  MacDonald had a farm

    All around the barnyard

Matching games with animals - the pairs have to make the sound of the animal to find the person with their match.

  4. Farmer’s Secret:  Write the names of farm animals on slips of paper. Put them in your pocket.  One by one pull out the slips of paper and give the children clues about what the animal is.  Continue until the children have guessed all of your animals.

•Use actual pictures of the animals and place them on the board when guessed.

Mother Says:  Pretend that you are the “Mother” giving your baby animals different directions:

“Mother Turkey says, ‘Waddle around the barnyard.’ ‘Now gobble as you waddle.’… Stop.”

“Mother Cow says, ‘Time to come into the barn for dinner.  Walk slowly.  Talk to each other if you would like.’… Stop.”

“Mother Horse says, ‘Let’s gallop around the pasture and jump the fences.’… Stop.”

“Mother Pig says, ‘Let’s go rolling in the mud.  Oink! Oink! Oink! It’s so much fun… Time to wash off under the hose.’…. Stop.”

Mother Sheep says, ‘Get ready for the long walk to the pasture.  Exercise your legs.’… Stop.”

Here a chick, There a chick:  Go on a chick hunt.  Create a supply of chick cutouts, being sure to make enough chicks for each child to have at least one.  Hide throughout the room.  Show the students a paper chick and explain there are several more chicks hiding.  Play some lively music and invite them to search for the remaining.  When the music stops, bring the group together to count each child’s chicks.  Make a graph with the children’s names on bottom and tape/glue the chicks found above their name..  Have each child place his chicks on the graph.  Use terms such as more, less, and equal to discuss the graph.

  6. How about  Animal memory matching game......just like normal memory game...make 2 teams, have pictures of animals up on board, allow 1 of each team to go up turn over the pictures, to find a match. Team with the most...winner! Keep score..or have 2 kids be score keepers...but make sure losers don't feel left out.....

Or, Animal guessing game....kids come up and make sound of an animal....other kids have to guess..teacher should go first...also do in teams.

Or, have 2 plastic toy hammers (those noisy soft ones)....have pictures of all taught animals....divide into two teams...put two pictures up on board(or draw all before hand). Teacher makes a noise of one of the animals, teams have to race and hit the picture.....first one scores point.

You can also download some animal sounds from internet.....make a cd and use that with the games.

  7. DRAW OR PRINT OUT FOUR FARM ANIMALS ON CARD AND RECORD A VARIETY OF SOUNDS TO MATCH PLAY MUSICAL ANIMALS WHEN THE MUSIC STOPS THEY RUN TO A CARD TO MATCH THE APPROPRIATE SOUND OR HAVE SOMEONE CALL OUT A SOUND
