Farmers Classic 2010: Sam Querrey successfully defends his title
The twenty two years old American tennis ace, Sam Querrey won the final at Los Angeles Tennis Centre by defeating the world number four Andy Murray 5-7, 7-6 (2), 6-3 in the Farmers Classic tennis championship on Sunday. His confidence as well as originality earned him victory in the end.
The second seeded, Sam Querrey knocked down the British number one Murray in a period of two hours and twenty three minutes and therefore defended his title successfully. After the match, the 2010 Farmers Classic champ, Sam was granted prize money of $111,950. With this victory, Sam Querrey also registered his name as the first player since Andre Agassi who successfully managed to defend his crown in Los Angeles.
This win over Murray was more significant for Sam as compared to his previous season’s victory against Carsten Ball. After the match, while commenting on his victory, "It feels superb" Querrey said. "Previous season I didn't knock down a player from the top ten list. So this is the first occasion that I've defended my crown and I feel really proud of myself at the moment”.
As far as Sam’s previous encounters with Andy Murray are concerned, the American has never grabbed even a single set in his last four clashes. Both of the players faced each other in round number four of the 2010 grass court Grand Slam tournament during the month of June and Murray won the match pretty comfortably with a final match score of 7-5, 6-3, and 6-4 at the All England Club.
However, it was not the case on Sunday in fact it was a different story all together.
After falling down in set number one, Sam did not lose his confidence at all. He went for the offensive style of play later on as compared to his defensive game that did the trick for the American. Moreover, Sam was also seen approaching the net on a couple of occasions in the final battle at the Los Angeles Tennis Centre on Sunday.
David Nainkin, who is the current coach of Sam Querrey while commenting on his victory, said that, “Sam approached the net for almost fifty times and that was highly appreciating”.
"The only thing I said to Sam was to play his natural game”, David said. “In my opinion, what earned him victory in the end was his confidence and belief that he can beat Murray and therefore he played his natural game and didn’t try to be someone else."
The Brit number one tennis ace, Andy Murray came in Los Angeles just three days prior to the start of the championship through a wild card entry as Novak Djokovic withdrew for some undisclosed personal reasons.
"It was a good championship," Murray commented. "However it is sad that I didn’t manage to win today, but I am still glad that I made it till the finals and did fight well till the end in spite of the fact that I couldn’t play at my very best, however I am trying to regain my fitness with every single match day by day”, he added.
As far as the American, Sam Querrey is concerned; he grabbed his fourth trophy of the season. Only the Spaniard, Rafael Nadal has so far won more trophies than him with a total of five up till now. However, Rafa's haul also includes the big ones such as the clay court French Open title as well as the grass court Grand Slam crown. On the other hand, Sam Querrey has not made it past the fourth round of any Grand Slam championship so far in his career.
Querrey therefore needs to improve his performance in major championships in order to be in the list of top ten players by the ATP.
