Farmers Insurance Open: Greg Chalmers and Rod Pampling stand in top 10 after 1st round
Aussie stars, Greg Chalmers and Rod Pampling, managed to consolidate their positions in the 1st round of Farmers Insurance Open, on Thursday.
Both the players stay comfortable in the top 10 and will look to make their standings even more solid in the next rounds at Torrey Pines.
Pampling was amazing, as he carded an 8-under 64 to finish the round tied for the 4th place. One the other hand, Greg Chalmers was a little behind his compatriot, with a 7-under 65 to stand tied for the 8th.
Both Aussies were comfortable with their swings and putts, making the most of good weather at Torrey Pines. Thursday went considerably calm, without any strong winds sweeping across the course.
The 42-year-old Pampling, who turned pro in 1994, looked more than thrilled when he came to know that he was one of the two Australians sitting inside the top 10.
He opened his round in an impressive style, carding a birdie on the par-5 1st hole. Holding his nerve, Pampling forged ahead with care, making sure his swings were perfect.
He bagged more surprises and applause from the spectators when he reeled off two straight birdies on the par-4 5th and the difficult par-3 6th hole.
After parring the 7th, the Aussie swung into action once again, scoring 2 consecutive birdies on the par-4 8th and par-5 9th hole.
On the back nine, Pampling carried on at the same pace. He birdied the par-5 14th, par-4 16th and par-5 18th holes.
Greg Chalmers, on the other hand, also looked fired up in the comfortable winds at Torrey Pines.
The PGA Championship winner stunned his rivals at the start of the day. He birdied the 1st two holes.
On the 3rd hole, the most difficult one, the ambitious Aussie held his nerve and scored a par. Right after that, he made another birdie on the 4th. On the front nine, his overall score was 3-under 33.
On the back nine, Chalmers scored 2 birdies on the tricky par-3 12th and par-4 16th. He grabbed attention, yet again, as he launched an eagle on the last hole, finishing the round 7-under 65.
