  1. In North America one has a lot of closing sales of animals when a farmer retires or goes bankrupt. Depending on the quality of stock kept, this can be ones best source of stock.

Farmers may also sell animals considered surplus to breeding plans. This can be the second best route.

There are also consignment auction barns, but for breeding stock this is not a good place to go, people send to those barns the culls from their herds. They also send there animals they can not feed, or animals raised to be finished by others.

The term ratio involved is very ambiguous. I can not anticipate what you want... ratio of what to what?

The term Colonial can mean very different things depending on whee in the world you are.

Colonial in America or India or Kenya, Indonesia, these all have very different connotations.

  2. you can buy livestock but it must ultimately come from reproduction, either on your farm or someone elses.  To keep the livestock alive you have to feed, water, and care for the animals.

  3. The question should be what kind of livestock are you looking for:  I live on a small farm and have lived around barnyard animals most of my life. In General

    1) a full sized horse eats about 25 pounds of hay a day. optionally, feed ten pounds of oats and you can drop to 25 pounds of straw.

    2) A full grown cow will eat about two tons of hay and three hundred pounds of grain in a four month winter.

    3) a pig will eat about 1 to 1.5% body weight in food daily.  They love human attention and would rather be petted and babied than eat when used to humans.

  4. Try this site, it should help you out.
