Farming was our primary source of income (and a good one at that) when we used to live in Iran. We now currently reside in Northern Virginia, and would like to know some info about West Virginia land? How many hectares or acres of lets say apple trees would be required to provide a good source of income ( above $100,000 year net)?

  1. A bunch.

Orcharding in west virginia is easier than most other forms of farming, because apple trees do well on the more rugged countryside than, say, corn would.

Yields for apple trees tend to be between 300 and 400 bushel per acre.  Costs are about $4,000 per acre to maintain your tracts.

So figure out how much you can get per bushel (yellow delicious is the official state fruit, and it grows well in the areas outside of the major metro areas in the state of Charleston, Huntington, and Morgantown).  Then just do some math.

  2. markets always dictates your products

  3. West Virginia isn't the best place in the world to engage in farming. Their number one agricultural product is rocks.

  4. Farming an apple orchard in West Virginia will easily make you a millionaire in two years.  That is ,of course, if you started out with two million dollars.
