  1. One type is called a "Stall shed" where each animal has its own little space to stand or lay. It is usually one long building with stalls along the sides and isles down the middle which a tractor can fit to scrap the manure out.  They other is a "loafing shed" and it is just that.  The animals can lay or stand wherever they want and just loaf... out of the weather.. it is usually 3 sided, open in the front.

I was born and raised on a dairy, these were the two types of housing we used.

  2. the 2 main types of housing are, cubicles, where each cow has a seperate area of bedding, divided by metal barriers,  with a central conrete strip which is scraped clean of dung every day.

or they are 'loose housed' where a big shed is covered every day with fresh straw, and the cows can wander and lie down anywhere in that shed

  3. could be that one type are tied with chains, around neck in a parlour/stall type building or

they are loose in a large building like silo/barn, and brought in twice daily to the milking parlour for milking.

  4. 4 star and 5 star

  5. In the US, the two main types of indoor housing would be "freestall" and "tie stall" housing.  The free stall housing allows the cattle to freely walk within the confines of the cattle lot usually covered by a roof line allowing for free choice of water, feed and then lying in a space with metal bars for dividers.  The bedding material may vary depending on the region: sand and rubber mats are very popular.  The cattle may lay in the free stall as long as they want until it is time for milking or seeking more feed or water.  The tie stall barn is typically found in the colder regions of the country and the cattle are kept in a similar size stall as the spacing for a free stall except that the cattle have a loose fitting chain around their neck and it is fastened to a chain at the front end of the stall.  The feed is brought to the cattle and water is supplied at each stall through a watering cup.  The cattle are milked in place and released to go outside for exercise for several hours everday in the colder weather and in the warmer weather may spend the majority of the day outside grazing in pastures or dry lots.   A third type of housing that is utilized by the large dairies and this is usually in the milder to warm climates is dry lot housing where the cattle are kept in dirt lots and free to walk around much like the free stall operation except that the cattle lay on the open ground and usually have some type of roof covering with open sides to give shade from the sunlight.
