Question:

Fashion Journalism as a career/major?

I'm playing around with some majors that I might want to pursue after High School, I know I don't need to decide right away but I'm trying to have some idea so I can pick a college that has what I need if I might want to change majors at some point.

I like writing a lot and fashion, but I don't like to design but I love to criticize people's outfits. I do it habitually without even thinking, so I was just wondering what sorts of things to fashion journalists do...

do they just write reviews of designers and runway shows and that sort of thing?

any firsthand knowledge would be awesome thanks!

I'm probably going to ask a bunch more questions on other things too...

  1. It would be fabulous!

I imagine they do what you described, but I'm sure there are many other things they could write about and specialize in.

Check out the fashion press, and see what the reporters are writing about - maybe you'll come across something that you hadn't thought about.

Look into schools - the one I am familiar with is FIT in NYC - GREAT college!  However, they seem to emphasize the design aspects. I would imagine most schools do.

But I wouldn't discount design.  Are you saying that you are interested ONLY in the journalism/communications aspects of fashion?  It would seem to me that having hands-on experience with design would well prepare you for such a career.

Anyhow, good luck!  That's a great career plan for you - wish I thought of it when I was 18 - now I'm a bum musician with no money.

But I'm hot, so maybe you could do a story on me someday... ;-)

    Love Jack
