There a some boutique-hotels nowadays in Buenos Aires. Faena is a good option, but a little expensive.

There is one which has appeared in many travel magazines as well as Travel channel. It's the Faena Hotel in Puerto Madero. The owner is the owner of Via Vai, a large clothes shop in Buenos Aires so your friend may know him from the business. This hotel is very ecclectic, the rooms are thematic and decorated with great taste. It's the most fashion hotel in BA right now.
