  1. Butterbur drops help allergies--takes awhile to build up.  I steam my head with boiling water and lavender/eucalyptus/rosemary essential oils, which helps open up the passages.  I also use Mucinex (blue) as it thins the mucous.  It is a med but it has no side effects.

  2. If the headaches are accompanied by sensitivity to light and sound, or nausea, they are probably migraines.  If not, they're just bad headaches.

    For headaches:

Folk Medicine used to say to treat headaches with "cold head, hot feet."  Much of herbal information agrees with this.

A cloth soaked in a bowl of herb tea (peppermint, rosemary, sage) and ice cubes applied to the forehead, and a heating pad applied to the feet (Or a hot foot bath) will bring relief to many headache sufferers.

Additionally, drinking chamomile tea with drops of Valerian tincture, and inhaling essential oil of lavender can be very helpful.

    For migraines:

Feverfew will help the pain, ginkgo biloba aids circulation and can reduce sensitivity to light and sound, peppermint will help with the nausea.

Take lecithin (between 3 and 6 1,200 mg capsules ) at the first sign of a migraine- it lessens both length and severity of the headache.

Avoid avocados, aged meats, chocolate, MSG, nitrites, canned fish, alcohol and dairy products.

The frequency of both severe and migraine headaches can be lessened by regular chiropractic adjustments.

  3. This is a quick and easy acupressure trick I learned a while back for headaches: Pinch the webbing between your thumb and forefinger on one hand, this should ease the pain.

  4. You should be clear on whether you have migraines or headaches. They are different and treatment are different. If they are migraines, many people find relief by drinking a 16 oz glass of water in 10 minutes. Wait about 20 minutes. This won't do anything for a headache.

You might also want to focus on your allergies, and I don't mean suppressing the symptoms. If this is the cause of your headaches, then that is where you will find true relief. There are many natural things that you can do to improve the impact of allergies. There are different types of allergies as well, environmental or food. Different approaches for each in many ways.

  6. In addition to the herbal/essential oil recipes below, there are two ebooks at remedies4.com (listed in the source area here) which have fully illustrated instructions for using reflexology/pressure points to relieve headaches.

    Headache Inhalant

    l 1 d. Rose oil

    l 1 d. Basil oil

    l 1 d. Orange oil

    l 1 d. Rosemary oil

Mix together in palm of hand. Rub hands together briskly and cup over nose and mouth. Inhale deeply through nose 3 times. Wipe off excess oils on a tissue or cotton pad and place in baggie for use throughout the day.

Do NOT get into eyes. If you get Essential Oils into eyes, flush with a vegetable oil, NOT with water!

    Bath for Headache Relief

    l 3 drops Chamomile

    l 3 drops Lavender

    l 2 drops Marjoram

    l 1 drop Thyme

    l 1 drop Peppermint

Fill bath tub with very warm water (NOT HOT). Add Essential Oils after the tub is full. Disperse oils through the water immediately before getting in. (Doing so prevents the oils from puddling into 1 area.) Soak, inhale deeple and relax for 20-30 minutes.

    Headache Tea

Pour 2 cups boiling water over 3 tablespoons dried primrose flowers and leaves. Let stand, covered, about 15 minutes. Strain and sweeten. Drink warm or hot. Use 1 heaping Tsp of dried Chamomile flowers for each cup of boiling water. Steep 10 minutes. Strain and sweeten with honey.

    Naturally Dull a Tension Headache

Dull a Tension headache by massaging a few drops of Peppermint Essential Oil (Mentha piperita) into your temples. Peppermint works as well as 1,000 mg of acetaminophen, the main ingredient in aspirin, according to one German study. Herb experts don’t know exactly how it works, but the Peppermint appears to prevent your body from sending pain signals to your central nervous system.

    Migraine Tea

    l 1 2/3 oz. St. Johns Wort

    l 1 oz Valerian

    l 1 oz. Linden Flowers

    l 1/4 oz. Juniper Berries

Use 1 tsp. of the mixture per cup of boiling water. Steep for 10 min, strain and sweeten. This tea helps dilate blood vessels and improve Circulation. If your Headaches are triggered by weather, drink the tea as the weather is changing

    Hope this helps :)
