My mother is going to some kind of party and needs to lose 10 pounds fast. Any ideas how?

The best thing to do is get aerobic exercise regularly (like walking, jogging, playing sports, anything that gets your heart rate up and keeps it up) and watching what one eats. So drink lots of water (8 glasses a day) and snack on fruits and veggies. Do not starve yourself, it does not work.
