I would like to get my mile time to about 6 mins would be good. i currently run around 7-8 min mile depending on the day. Im trying to get fit for the marine corp to be a sniper and i have to do a 3 mile run in under 18 mins. any ideas on how to get faster? I've been running a bit each day for distance not time. to get my body use to the distance then go for faster. I had gotten my time down already this year by a few mins.

  1. run more like a lot of times a day for a long long time. practice is perfect and will reach you to ur goal.

  2. there is this really hardcore guy where I live. you see him running in all kinds of weather (icy, snowy, raining, hot) with 10 pound weights on both of his wrists and on both of his ankles. that really might help. it's worth a shot!! :)

  3. I'm a highschool mile runner and we have a very vigorous program, but it really helps.  It usually consists of 3 hard workouts a week, 1 usually a speed workout, such as fast 200, 400 and 800 reps, 1 a tempo run, which is a run where you are going at a pace where you begin to feel the strain, but you don't build up lactic acid, and 1 is usually longer reps, such as 1000's. These are every other day, and run easy runs in between these, usually between 30 and 70 minutes.  For these do a slightly longer run after harder workouts and short runs right before any races or similar things.  Make sure to get a good long warmup before running, including stretching and jogging.  And as for getting under 18 minutes, that is not very easy.  Even if you could run a 6 minute mile, it still would not be a gaurantee that you could run under 20 for a 3 mile.  First improve your mile, but keep working on longer distances.

  4. 3 miles in under 18 min sounds very rigorous. you'll have to have intense training. try running a good paced 3 miles one day, then the next day have a recovery and run an easy 3 miles, the next day try 4 miles as best as you can, next day make it a recovery day of an easy 4 miles (easy pace). try to push yourself to your best ability but don't push too hard (i'm currently injured from pushing myself too hard with sprints). make sure to warm up and cool down, include lots of stretches, drink plenty of water.. blah blah you know the details. but try to push your distance each day.

  5. I'm not a expert on running

but i've heard 70%-80% of running is metal...so just think good thoughts

  6. Even if you can run one mile in 6 mins, you cant really run 3 in 18. I dont really know what to say except run a lot. If I were you though Id alternate running three miles at a slower pace with speed work like 200m reps if you have access to a track.

Just to encourage you though, I once dropped my mile time from 7:40 to 6:29 in a week. It shouldnt be too hard to drop that extra minute thirty.
