Father Smith targets Test No. 1 spot – Cricket News Update

South Africa’s Test skipper, Graeme Smith, said on Wednesday that the current Proteas squad is the best bunch of players he had been involved with and that they are determined to topple England as the World No. 1 Test side with some eye-catching performances
in the next two five-day encounters.

“We are training every day to try to be that team. We need to walk that walk and go out to the middle and win those games to prove that to people,” said the 31-year-old South African opener, who returned England yesterday to take charge of the team ahead
of the second Test against the hosts, starting at Leeds, today, August 2.

"Our mindset is that we would love to be holders of that title. We understand that the job's not done, and it's not done for a period time if we want to see ourselves at the top of the rankings for a while," he added further.

After playing a straining role in his side’s innings and 12-run victory in the series opener at The Oval, with an exquisite ton, Smith flew home to attend the birth of his first child – a beautiful baby girl, Cadence Christine Smith. The Proteas skipper
missed the two-day tour match against Worcestershire over the last weekend. In his absence, wicketkeeper batsman AB de Villiers led the side in the drawn tour game.

The tourists currently lead the series 1-0, and a victory at Leeds would allow South Africa to take the number one ranking from England.

Smith said that after a break of more than a week, he was very much prepared for the challenge, and hoped to achieve the milestone over the next five days. The visiting skipper, though, warned his side against complacency saying the Poms are a quality team
and have the capability of beating them.

“…we're certainly not taking anything for granted,” said the Transvaal-born left-hander, who is just one match away from equaling Allan Border’s record for most Tests as captain.

“They have the capabilities of beating us, and that's why they're the number one team in the world,” Smith insisted.
