Father-Son Challenge to feature Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer
Many of the golfing legends will take to the course at Father-Son Challenge, including two of the greatest players ever, Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer.
PNC Father-Son Challenge will be played for the first time since 2008. The tournament did not take place for the last three years, for unknown reasons. However, the event returns with a bang as many legends will be seen in action.
Any player who has either won a major or the Players Championship during their career can take part in this event.
This year’s field consists of players who, in total, have 492 professional wins either on the US PGA Tour or the European Tour, including 67 majors as well.
Out of eighteen teams, fifteen of them would be consisting of father and son. The eighteen time major winner, Jack Nicklaus will be partnering his son, Gary. The duo has won this tournament once previously, in 1999.
The event has had its funny moments. One such incident took place when Fuzzy Zoeller partnered his daughter, Gretchen. The tournament’s official name is Father-Son but, in fact, fathers are allowed to team up with their daughters and grandsons as well.
The tournament is played over 36-holes in the memory of two British golfers, Willie Park Snr and Willie Park Jnr. All the teams compete for the Willie Park Trophy and the prize money for the 2012 event is $1,000,000.
This year’s event will take place from December 15-16 at Ritz-Carlton Golf Club in Orlando, Florida.
Those who will not be playing with their sons include the legendary golfer Arnold Palmer, who will team up with his grandson, Bernhard Langer and Fuzzy Zoeller will be partnering with his daughters.
This year’s field includes Steve Elkington, Nick Faldo, Raymond Floyd, Hale Irwin, Lee Janzen, Langer, Davis Love III, Sandy Lyle, Larry Nelson, Nicklaus, Mark O'Meara, Palmer, Vijay Singh, Dave Stockton, Curtis Strange, Lee Trevino, Lanny Wadkins and Zoeller.
Larry Nelson has won this tournament for a record three times, twice with Drew Nelson in 2004 and 2008. In 2007, Larry teamed up with the elder Nelson, Josh, to win the tournament.
