Father/Son Challenge to see Nicklaus team paired with the Palmers
This season’s Father/Son Challenge at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Club, Orlando, Florida will be treated to a special tee off. On Sunday, Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer will be playing at the Ritz.
The two greatest golfers in golfing history will be seen together after a very long time. The first time they were seen together at the event was in 1999.
The Nicklaus-Palmer rivalry and friendship has been the greatest legend in golf, which defined the game and popularized it over the ages.
There will also be other elite players teeing off on the first round of the Challenge. Davis Love III, and son Dru Love will be take the field at 9:14, paired against Lanny Wadkins and Tucker Wadkins.
David Duval and step-son Nick Karavites will be teeing much earlier. The Irwins and Trevinos will precede the star-performance of the day.
At 9:58, Jack Nicklaus and son Gary Nicklaus will take to the field against Arnold Palmer and grandson Will Wears in pursuit of the Willie Park trophy and $1 million prize purse.
Jack Nicklaus expressed nostalgic sentiments to his long-time rivalry and friendship with Arnold Palmer. He said he simply loved the Father/Son Championship and said it was nice that he will be sharing the moment with Palmer.
Palmer said the event has held a special place in his heart over the years. He thanked the PNC in being able to bring the event about.
“The chance to team up with our family members, to play in front of the fans, and for me personally to play with Jack again will make this event very special," he said.
"I am delighted the Father/Son Challenge is back," said Nicklaus. "I always enjoy playing with my sons.
“It's always very special when you have the opportunity to do anything with your children, and to be able to compete together in a game that has meant so much to me my entire life is a real treat but also a reflection of a uniquely special quality about
golf”.
Nicklaus said that this season, as opposed to when Gary and he played together in 1999, he is going to rely on his son’s ability to strike hard and far.
His golfing has lost that bit of raw nerve he had in the last Father/Son tournament some 13 years ago. He also admitted to his stroking-ability losing at least about 50 yards or more.
He will be relying on Gary to make up for the loss and “get him on the green.” Nicklaus did say that most of the fathers this tournament would have similar complaints as his.
Tickets start at $15 for a day and $45 for the duration of the tournament. This will be an excellent opportunity for fans to see the golfing greats together one more time.
