Question:

Father as dependent in military?

Ok, so here is the question. I am in the military and am considering trying to put my father as a dependent. As he is right now he can barely afford to live let alone get the medical care he needs(diabetes). I was wondering how hard it is and how long of a process it is to get someone added as a dependent so he can get both proper medical care and a place to live...

  1. It is very hard to get a parent as a dependent, especially if the following applies:

    You have siblings

Your father is capable of taking care of himself

    He has a job

    He is not disabled

If your father lived with you and you were taking care of him, it is a little easier to get him as a dependent.  You have to go to your local deers office and get a Dependency Packet.  You will fill out that packet and then you have to mail it to DFAS.  Sometimes, they don't answer, so you have to write again.  My mother was disabled and wasn't working and at the time she wasn't receiving disability and they never game me dependency over her.  Good Luck.

  2. This is the Army regulation that covers adding parents as a dependent, AR 600-8-14.

  3. basically you must prove you provide at least 51% of all his income/needs and not only can he not care for himself, but there is absolutely no other person who could take care of him.  .

as for medical care.,.he would only be Space A as a secondary dependent, meaning he would not have immediate access..and some bases do not accept secondaries at all.

  4. In order to make a parent or parent-in-law a Military dependent, you must show that you provide at least 51 percent of that person's support. If she makes $1507.00 per month, you would have to show that (1) her expenses total at least $3015 per month and that you provide at least $1508 per month of that support, in order to make them a Military dependent.

Additionally, the regulation contains a special provsion, when it comes to parents and parents-in-law that are approved to be Military dependents -- they are not eligible for Tricare -- only "space available" medical care in Military medical facilities

  5. I applied in October and was added in Feburary. I only have on post medical and I had to be living with my son as a 100 percent dependant.

You can get the forms at DEERS.

  6. Does he have a source of income aside from you? If he does, then he can't be a dependent. You have to be his sole source of support.
