Question:

Faulty Timing belt on Y 17 DT engine?

I have a 03 Vauxhall Astra 1700 Diesel (Y 17 DT). I bought a timing belt kit and replaced the belt. I set up as described, tensioning as described. I noticed that the belt moved off the tensioner pulley about 1/4" when engine crank turned clockwise. Fitted and started and all well except rubbing of timing belt on engine mount due to this 1/4" riding off the tensioner pulley.

Have you any thoughts?

  1. Are you sure you have the right size belt. I have never heard of a belt moving off the tensioer like that unless the tensioner spring has gone., or it''s the wrong size belt.

  2. is it still riding 1/4 inch off the tensioner pulley.  Is the normal rotation of the engine clockwise?  I would certainly be looking at all the pulleys, especially the tensioner to see if something is keeping from fitting properly.

  3. You have fitted a pulley or a tension er not square on the mounting remove the pulley and tension er ,and refit and try again ,if it runs off again you have bent one off the mountings .

  4. take it to a garage

if you need to ask this question you should have done this in the first place as an engine for this car is like hens teeth
