Question:

Favorite Boardgames?

Now that we live in the digital world, people are playing boardgames less and less. What boardgame is your all-time favorite? Have you played any new ones within the past 2 years that you really thought were refreshing and fun?

I'm thinking about buying a couple of them. One for girls night (we are in our early 30s-late 20s) and the other for just a group of friends (male and female- around 6-8 players.)

Thank you!

  1. definately scrabble!! I've recently bought 'are you smarter than a ten year old', it was quite fun and to be honest some relatively difficullt questions (history aged 10)

    Have a good night :)

  2. There aren't many good games that will handle 8 players.

Here's my list of recent designer games (all games clock in under 2 hours).

Take 6 - Quick card game for up to 10 players

Diamant - A 'Push your luck' game for up to 8 players.

Bang - A card game where you don't know who's on your side until the end.

Pitchcar - A racing game where you flick your 'car' around a race track. This game always gets a great reaction when I teach it to new players.

Pickomino - Roll the dice and push your luck. The theme is odd, but it's a LOT of fun.

Alhambra - out buy your opponents and build a better palace.  A quieter more thoughtful game.    3-6 players.

Bohnanza - a great card game that's all about making deals.  Lots of interaction. A must have.

Fearsome Floors - A race to get your pawns out of the dungeon before the monster gets you.  2-7 players

Lifeboats - Very nasty game where you vote on who to toss over the side of various lifeboats. Make deals, backstab, and get your people to safety to win. 3-6 players.

Shadows over Camelot - Players play together to beat the game. The catch is that there MAY be a traitor in the group.  A little tricky to understand at first, but worth the trouble.

You won't find these games at a Wal Mart... you'll have to go to a specialty game store in your area.

  3. monopoly is definitely a classic

    cranium is great for parties

catchphrase is my all time favorite

  4. Risk. Its fun to conquer and fight for more!

  5. Twilight Imperium 3. http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/12493

But close seconds are Fury of Dracula, Perikles and Struggle of Empires.

Also see: Arkham Horror, Railroad Tycoon, Bang!, Ca$h&Guns, Condottiere and Ra.

  6. pictionary... its lots of fun. especially if you cant draw!

  7. My absolute favorite board game of all time is Scrabble because I like word games and I love the challenge of Scrabble.  However it is best for just two players.

A great game that I have played recently is Taboo.  It is excellent for larger groups and a lot of fun.  The rules are simple - you have to get your teammates to say the word at the top of the card without saying any of the words at the bottom of the card.  For example if the words you need to get your team to say are "birth certificate" you might not be allowed to say baby, identification, paper, born, hospital.  I think it would work for both groups you mention.

  8. Axis & Allies. (risk on steroids)

  9. You have to get Cranium! It is the best game ever. Its alot of games rolled into one and you need at least 6 people to have a good game going!

I promise you wont be sad if you invest in it!!!

  10. chess

  11. Pokemon Monopoly and Boggle

  12. chess, scrabble and monopoly. they are all practical and it stimulates ur brain.

  13. For me,it's all about Scrabble.Triple Word SCORE!!!
