Im looking into purchasing a second saddle that I can use mainly when roundpenning and breaking horses. I would like to find an OK brand something that can endure rough riding and use. Used is fine with me.

  1. Stubben Siegfried!  Mine will be 40 years old next year and it's held up under my colts, kids and the likes.  IF you're looking, try ebay, they have some GREAT deals on there and you can sneak in and find 'em.

  2. Perhaps if you keep watching on Ebay you can find what you are looking for.  Remember though that once you get the saddle shipped to you there is no guarantee that it will fit or be what you expected and hoped it would be.  Sometimes you can have an agreement with the seller that the saddle must meet with your expectations or your money back.  Keep watching on horse websites on their classifieds section.

  3. i back and train my horses in  a Wintec. They are not my first choice for riding but they have like a lifetime warrenty.

I really love Crosby. They last forever and are reasonable when you buy them used. They wear really well. I have had 2 and loved them both.

HDR makes a pretty good saddle two. They do not wear as well as a nice older crosby but they can be pretty comfortable. They leather is of a lower quality though and most of the time they are flocked with foam.

    Good luck saddle shoping.

EDIT: If you get a wintec be aware of the dangers of CAIR. They system sucks. It is the air panels and makes it so the horse doesn't have any pressure pts but air cannot absorb shock. Alot of horses i used the saddle on got very sore backs from this. My saddle fitter said if i wanted to use the saddle i need to get a sheepskin pad to make up for the lack of wool flocking. I bought a Mattes pad to go under it and have not had any problems but i don't reccomend getting the cair system alone. Baby need to build their back muscles and you don't want  the saddle making them sore.

  4. Well, I have known several trainers that use a Wintec Pro all-purpose with Cair for breaking and training.  You should be able to get one used on ebay, with fittings, for about 400, maybe a tad more.  The pro has a sueded seat, more grippy for dealing with those difficult moments.  It's super durable and easy to clean--just hose it of.  Also, you can adjust the gullet to fit whatever new horse you may be training or breaking.  The cair panels are great for the horse's back.  I reccommend the all-purpose for the extra security of the deep seat.

Here is one that is perfect for you (assuming you use a 17")! http://cgi.ebay.com/Wintec-2000-ap-W-CAI...

I totally reccommend this for your puposes.  If you have a tack store near you with a large consignment saddle area, you should be able to find one there easily, as well.

I have bought 3 saddles off of ebay, including a wintec, and have gotten excellent deals on all of them.  Good luck!

Edit: I read through the description of that ebay saddle more.  You get a lot with it, changeable gullets, "leathers," irons, cover, saddle pad, etc.  totally worth it.  However, the flexiblocs (adjustable knee blocks) are missing.  These are like $20.  You can find wintec flexiblocs online easily.  I totally reccommend this deal

Edit 2: Here is another http://cgi.ebay.com/Wintec-2000-all-purp...

If you want to go even cheaper, you can get a Wintec 500, that does not have a sueded seat.  Extra durable easy to clean equileather.  Here is a close contact: http://cgi.ebay.com/WINTEC-CLOSE-CONTACT...  Another cc http://cgi.ebay.com/Light-Use-Close-Cont...  Another cc http://cgi.ebay.com/Wintec-Close-Contact...  Here is a great 500 w/cair and all gullets plus girths and cover, http://cgi.ebay.com/Wintec-A-P-English-S...  I hope that these are enough to get you looking!  I owned a wintec 500 for several years.  They are all great saddles.  The barn where I ride has 4 of them.

  5. Brand should not matter. It's far more important the saddle fit the horse, and we can't tell you that.

Do you have a tack shop in your area?   Those that sell used saddles will often lend out a few at a time for fitting purposes.

  6. A crosbys  The best for the monie

  7. Go to Chick's Discount Saddlery on the net. I think it's chicksaddlery.com. I have purchased from them in the past and have been very satisfied. They have everything from top of the line to very well priced package deals for english and western and just about everything in between.

  8. A good saddle that i use and im training my horse is Kincade.  Its a nice quality saddle that i have used in the rain, heat, cold.  It is aan awesome saddle that is fairly cheap if used.  I have had mine for 4 years and it is still like i just bought it.  It also fits my horse wondefully which is very important when buying a horse.  they are not the nicest brand but they are worth way more than what they sell for.  Good luck in finding the saddle that will work for you and your horse.

  9. I would get an HdR avantage, or HdR in general (Henry de Rivel)

  10. Tucker saddles run pretty low I have notice around my area highest was 450 I know its over your 400 but they are worth that amount and more! there so comftorable!
