Here in the Chicago suburbs there are lots of small ponds,1-10 acres roughly with most having no obvious areas of cover to fish for.I haven't had much luck using one thing over another so far.The bass in these ponds typically don't get above 3 pounds.I was wondering when you fish smaller ponds what have you had the most luck with?

10 points for best answer btw.

  1. My friends have a private small pond and we caught alot of bass on bigger roostertails. Those things can amazing for aggresive bass. Also, Texas-rigged worms work well. The best color being green pumkin. or black with a red tail. Those would be my first two suggestions. Usally a floating  Rapala work well but sometimes in small ponds, the bass are hesitant to come to the surface. Hope that helps.

  2. I also live in the Chicago burbs and fish the Fox River and small ponds on a regular basis. Try using a Rapala countdown. The beautiful thing about this little bait is that it sinks so you can reach some of those fish that are hanging in deeper water. Oftentimes the fish will hit the bait right when it hits the water! I usually use the CD-1, which is the smallest in the series, but you can go larger if you are fishing deeper water. The bait sinks about 1 foot per second so be sure to count as it drops and retrieve when you are at your desired depth. Good luck and happy fishing!!

  3. My favorite soft bait for pond fishing is a black frog that I rig carolina style.  If the pond has any grass or lilly pads, rig the frog weedless and pitch it into the grass.  Keep your rod tip up and slowly reel it out of the grass, bouncing the weight up and down to create a swimming action.

My second favorite is a pumpkin seed colored lizard, also rigged carolina style.  You can bounce this along the bottom in shallow or deep water.  Adjust your weight to the depth you are fishing.

  4. definitely the texas rigged worm is the best pond lure. Colors dont matter all that much but try green pumpkin or junebug. Always make sure your hooks r sharp. Good luck fishing
