Favorite toys in cereal back in the day?

Dave B. reminded me of something. My mom bought Shredded Wheat cereal, and I remember my brothers collecting these small rubbery alien toys that came in the box, they were tan, and you put them on your spoon handle. I guess it was to make you want to eat your Shredded Wheat, but I didn't like Shredded Wheat back then. Does anyone remember those little figures I mentioned or any other collectibles from the cereals from the 1960 back?

  1. Some cereal, don't remember which, used to put a deep sea diver in the box.  One foot was really big and you put baking soda and vinegar in it.  In case you don't know baking soda and vinegar really fizz.  You put the diver in water and he would shoot to the top and spin around a few seconds.  We kids weren't very interested in this toy but my dad loved it!

  2. When I was very little my mother used to buy Quaker Oats cereal and they had a little glass dish in them.  It looked like fine crystal to me and I had a whole set of them for my dolls.  This was in the early sixties.  I still have the set. Little plates little bowls, little cups.  I would get a new one each time she opened the cereal and I would excitedly wait to see what I got that time.  They was just tea sized.  I don't know what they were really for but I still have some of them.  I let my own kids play with them and they never have broken.

I remember the aliens.  My brother had a whole bunch of them and we played with them in the bath tub.  I hated shredded wheat too but we loved the aliens.  Hey, but the one cereal I hated the most was grape nuts.  What was that stuff anyway?  It hurt my teeth.  Thanks for the memories.

  3. My brother and I wanted the deep sea scuba diver.

  4. I can't remember little figures but in the 50s In the Shredded Wheat boxes didn't they used to have divider cardboard with some sort of game or puzzle or something written on them? I can remember the cards but for the life of me I can't remember what  "fun" stuff it was. I just remember looking forward to getting at those cards.

  5. I like the little scuba diving men, where you had to put baking soda (or something) into them to make them go. They never really worked that good, but it was fun.

  6. Well we didn't get much cereal but my sis and I loved the little train cars that came in Rice Crispies,we would get all the kids in the neighborhood together and put all our cars together to have a train. We spent hours building towns and playing in the dirt.Awhhhhhhhh what a memory.

  7. we had very little store bought-in cereal -- mostly  fired mush and eggs == when we did it was quaker oats and it seems like there was wash rages of something like that in the box!!!

  8. My brother closest to my age got a sub marine once and he still has it.  It was very durable and used a rubber band someway to move int he tub.  We had such fun with that toy!

  9. I don't recall submarines but I remember the little cricket that chirped when it was pressed. My kids drove me nuts with that thing.

  10. I remember a decoder ring , and those little green subs. . .and what about what was on the back of the boxes . . .paper eye glasses and masks and mom always bought the detergent that had dishes inside .Was it Fels Nafta ? or Fab ?

  11. I don't remember getting toys from any cereal boxes but I remember my Nan saved up all the coupons she got from her Weetabix boxes and got me a children's encyclopedia. I still have it at my parent's house.

  12. Whistles and secret de-coder rings =)

  13. the most I remember were the submarines that we put baking soda powder tablet in to make it sink in the bath tub. My brother and me use to fight over it.

  14. Yeah, I remember those little plastic toys at the bottom of cereal boxes.  It was tough digging down through all those corn flakes to get at that toy, without getting yelled at by your older sisters.

There were also toys at the bottom of Cracker Jack boxes. We soon learned to open the bottom of the box first.  However, we still ate the cracker jacks; they were goo-ood.

  15. I can't remember the toys. My Grandmother got (I think)a cup or bowl sometimes in the oatmeal.

  16. Yeah, I had a really cool secret decoder ring with a rotating thingy on it.  If you took the thingy off it (kind of like removing a stone from a class ring,) there was a two-sided piece of foil underneath.  The green side provided a dark background so you could read the coded alphabet on the thingy, and the silver side was so you could send messages in Morse code by reflecting sunlight with it.  How cool can you get?

My second grade teacher took it away from me because she thought I was playing with marbles when the thingy fell off and hit the floor.  *gasp*  The trauma of second grade!
