Favourites rule in September races at Henlow
Henlow hosted a series of September races last night, including the September Puppy, the September Midi, and the September Stayers. All three were graded as open races.
September Puppy
In the September Puppy, 2-1 race favourite, Rio Ravel, needed to recover from a slow start to win over Brave Gold. Gold got off to a great start compared to Ravel, but couldn’t keep her speed up as Ravel caught up, and passed her on the third bend. Ravel finished 2 ¼ lengths ahead of Gold.
East of Eden took third place with a strong finish after losing ground on the first bend. Westmead Oscar suffered a similar set back on the first bend, but wasn’t able to match Eden’s finish as the youngest pup of the group finished in fourth place.
Lavally Rumble tried to move up on the third bend, but was only able to finish ahead of Killioshin Sport, who got off to a terrible start and finished in dead last, a head behind Rumble.
September Midi
It was another 2-1 race favourite, On His Way, taking the September Midi by 3 lengths ahead of Rio Sanzio. On His Way was well on his way to his first win since June 24 after getting off to an excellent start. Rio Sanzio did his best to keep up, but never really challenged for the lead.
The third spot went to Westmead Bonny, who also looked good in the early going, but wasn’t able to make a move on Sanzio as she finished in third place, 1 length behind second.
In fourth was Bridge Bond, who managed to stay ahead of Forever Irish, who was pressing from the outside after a good start from the sixth trap. Blonde Rosie finished last after the worst start of the group.
September Stayers
The favourites made a clean sweep, finishing with 8-11 race favourite, Skyscape Star, in the September Stayers. Star got off to a good start and led early in the race, but lost the lead on the second bend to Midway Rouble, but came back on the fifth bend to retake the lead for good.
Longshot Kiltrea Dora, at 8-1, was near the lead and took second by 3 1/3 lengths over Knockies Hannah. Rouble ended up all the way back in fifth after his brief race lead, and Hannah put herself into third with a strong finish.
Rough Mariah lost too much ground in the early going to challenge for a spot in the top three, but she was able to beat Fabulous Babe by a neck.
