The Borussia Monchengladbach manager has admitted that the loss at home in the first-leg was the main reason his side has been knocked-out of the competition.
The Foals lost their UEFA Champions League play-off fixture against Dynamo Kiev despite winning the away leg with a 2-1 margin in Kiev. The Ukrainians were victorious in the first-leg at Borussia Park as they downed the German
side with a 3-1 margin.
Lucien Favre admitted that his side played the second leg brilliantly and put in a sensational performance. He insisted that the team had a great chance to score the third in the dying moments of the match, but they were unlucky
not to score. The match ended 2-1 and Dynamo progressed on a 4-3 aggregate.
The manager stressed that the team’s performance at home was heavily disappointing. He stated that even a draw at Borussia Park would have been enough for a place in the group stages of the competition.
“It was a great disappointment. We were a few inches away from a third goal when Kiev were panicking, but it's clear we have lost the battle at home,” he was quoted as saying in an interview.
On the other hand, Foals’ goalkeeper Marc Andre ter Stegen is also upset on his team’s exit from Europe’s prime club competition. He insisted that the side had high hopes of playing in the Champions League, but is now ready to
focus on the Bundesliga for next week.
The goalkeeper added that his side will now try and secure all three points against Fortuna Dusseldorf at the ESPRIT Arena on Saturday, September 1.
“Of course we are all disappointed, but in the end, life goes on. We have to look ahead and see that we make sure that we go back to work focused at Dusseldorf on Saturday, and hopefully take three points there,” the German international
concluded.
Lucien Favre guided Borussia Monchengladbach to a staggering fourth-place finish at the end of last season in the league. The team finished behind the likes of Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich and Schalke on the Bundesliga standings
table.
