Favre takes practice field with Vikings
Brett Favre flew to the Minnesota Vikings training camp Tuesday, and the team confirmed on Wednesday that newly unretired quarterback will practice with the Vikings. The 40-year-old quarterback will join his teammates and then hold a news conference, according to the team's website.
After staying away from OTAs (Organized Team Activities), training camp, and the Vikings first preseason game against Sam Bradford and the St. Louis Rams, Favre will be practising less than 24 hours after joining his team. No word yet if Favre will suit up for the Vikings next preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. Favre is expected to take a couple of snaps with the first team to slowly get back into the groove of playing football and toss a few passes to shake off the rust.
A grey-bearded Favre, who turns 41 in October, has been dealing with a media frenzy ever since arriving at Minneapolis-St.Paul International Airport. His every move is being monitored from three different angles. Tight end Visanthe Shiancoe tweeted “Helicopters acting like they are following O.J. Where is the bronco?”
Favre is coming off one of his best seasons, statistically speaking, in 2009 and led the Vikings to a 12-4 record during the regular season only to lose in the National Football Conference championship game.
The three-time NFL MVP had surgery on his ankle in June, then reportedly told teammates and some team officials earlier in August that his surgically repaired ankle hadn't healed enough for him to return for a 20th NFL season. But after receiving a visit from defensive end Jared Allen, guard Steve Hutchinson and kicker Ryan Longwel, Favre hopped on a private jet and decided to return. No word on how the ankle is holding up and if it feels better than it did a few weeks ago.
The Vikings will open the 2010 season on September 9 against the defending Super Bowl champions New Orleans Saints.
