Fear Zafonic impresses at Betfair E.A. Derby Trial
Fear Zafonic showed the rest of the pack how it’s done yesterday at Yarmouth. Zafonic won the division one Betfair E.A. Derby Trial Stakes by almost 10 lengths over Lainedans Flyer. There were four trial stakes races on the day.
In the division four race, 8-1 longshot, Springwell Hot, started out from the fourth trap and stayed in the middle of the pack, but was able to get out ahead of the rest before the crowd closed in. Hot, at 8-1, won the race by a ½ length over Perfect Review. 9-4 Race favourite Geralds Gift couldn’t get past the crowd and had to settle for a third place finish. Herberts Dilemma finished in fourth just a head behind Geralds. Lonesome Rab took the fifth spot, and Final Navigator, a 10-1 long shot, couldn’t navigate out of last place.
The division three race saw a familiar match-up, Rockforest Ace, 3-1, and Glanske Bond, 2-1. After losing twice to Bond in late July at Yarmouth, Ace was able to extract some revenge. Ace took the lead halfway through the race and took first place by a head over Bond. Riverside Legend, 3-1, took third while the three longshots finished in the last three spots. Eye Onthe Brave took fourth while Filey Assasin and Springwell Ben took fifth and sixth respectively.
Joint-favourites, Reluctant and Lanrigg Lad at 5-2, took first and second in the division two race. Reluctant led from the traps and was challenged by Lad in the latter half of the race, but held on to win by ¾ lengths. Eye Onthe Flash, 3-1, was bumped and couldn’t make up ground on the leaders finishing in third, 4 lengths behind Lad. In fourth place was Beauford Bound, who finished 5 ¾ lengths behind Flash. Millwards Siren finished in fifth, and On Ya Boyo finished sixth.
Division four 6-4 race favourite, Bucks Yahoo, finished last after being crowded early. Fear Zafonic , 9-4, was impressive, winning the race by 9 ¾ lengths over Lainedans Flyer. Zafonic will be one to watch next month at the Betfair East Anglian Derby where he will look to defend his crown. 12-1 longshot, Ocean Star, managed to keep ahead of Chicago Price, and Gerry Rob John to take third. Price finished in fourth, and Rob John finished fifth.
The Betfair East Anglian Derby begins on 4 September with eight heats. The Derby will close to entries at noon on 31 August.
