Fear Zafonic sets track record at Yarmouth
Things are looking good for Charlie Lister at Yarmouth, after the legendry trainer secured a treble in last night’s opening heats for the East Anglian Derby (462m).
It was 2009 greyhound of the year Fear Zafonic who stole the spotlight on the night after clocking 27.27sec to beat kennel mate Reluctant by almost six lengths in the second heat, and also set a new track record in the process, which is 13 spots (0.13sec) better than the time clocked by former kennelmate Ninja Jamie in the 2008 final.
Zafonic who was priced as a 1-3 favourite pinged to perfection from the trap three box and paid punters dividends. The speedy tracker now has his price shortened to 2-1 in the ante-post market to triumph and give Lister his eleventh victory in the competition.
If Zafonic fails, it won’t necessarily affect Lister’s assault on the East Anglian Derby after Yahoo Jamie and last year’s runner-up Jordansoilutions also won their heats respectably and are also favoured to land the spoils in the ante post market.
Trainer Seamus Cahill also celebrated a double on the night thanks to Guinness Time (27.61sec) and Zaheer (27.74sec).
Other notable winners on the night were Ten Large Down (27.66sec), Lainedans Flyer (27.87sec) and Roo Come On (28.05sec).
