Question:

Fear of Flying, what to do?

Hey. I live in Israel, and I'm thinking of going to Los Angeles for a vacation, like go to Hollywood and maybe spot some celebs :). But the only problem is, I'm terrified of flying, I know it's very safe, but if things do go wrong, it will be an unstoppable disaster. So my question is what are the chances of a plane to crash, and should I go to LA? or is it too risky?

  1. Very unlikely. You need to let go of that fear... b/c it probably will happen if you think about it all the time. It seems to me that the universe conspires to make something happen if you think about it all the time. Just let it go. You're tons more likely to get in a car crash or be struck by lightning. It is always worse before you go, but once you go more it will get easier. Lots of people have a little bit of fear of what could happen on a plane, but most of them control that fear and fly anyway.

  2. There are some 25,000 flights a day. There are, say, 10 'Incidents' A day. An Incident can be a crash, or, An angry passenger. Most crashes are in Private aircraft, your on a commercial plane, so more safety features.

So about 10/25,000, and crashes aren't "OH MY GOD! MY SKULL IS IN MY KNEECAP! GWAHH! OH MY GOD!" Most plane crashes aren't deadly. You'll just get minor injuries. And this is IF you crash, which is a low chance.

  3. Go, you can't hide from your fears forever! They hold you back on so much. I was scared to fly from U.S to Germany but  honestly once I got on the flight I was perfectly fine. There are always people who get nervous that have to fly places and don't want to. It may be hard but you will be so comfortable. Everything will go smoothly so don't hold back and enjoy life!

    Hope this helps!

  4. Just think about someone getting up and SCREAMING ALLAH AKBAR!!! =]

  5. FLY

  6. Just to give you an idea: the amount of people that die from drunk driving each week can fill two jumbo jets. It is actually safer to fly.

If you are afraid, you should take some dramamine. It is used for air sickness but also makes you relaxed and sleepy. I am not sure what they call it in Israel but I am sure the pharmacist can tell you what to take with you. Take it about one hour before you depart so that it can start to relax you. Also, you may want to let the flight attendants (air hostesses) know that you are a fearful, first time flyer and they will reassure you most of the time.

    Safe flying

  7. Get on the plane.  Sometimes you just have to trust in your reason and disreguard the irrational part of yourself that tells you DANGER!  Air travel is very safe and plane crashes are very very very seldom compared to how many of those things are in the air as we speak.  According to one source, there are over 3400 planes in the air right now in the US alone.  Just trust your reason when flying, and the next time you'll be confident from your past good experience.

  8. just go -_-

  9. I understand what you are saying. I have friends that are afraid too, but if you think about it, hundreds, maybe thousands of planes are flying around every day, and you only hear about one crashing mybe like a couple times a year. The flight will probably be like 10 hours, and i have ridden in flights longer than that 5 or 6 times, and haven't died. NO WORRIES!!! just ride the plane!!! :), unless you plan to ride a boat there.

  10. Depends on how important it is to you to take the trip.  If it is important, just go.  As you already know, flying is very safe.  Try taking some dramamine or something to calm your nerves before you get on the plane.

Yes, it's risky to fly, but it's risky to get into a car or bus or even walk down the street anywhere in the world.  According to numbers from the US National Center for Health Statistics, the odds of dying in a plane crash are roughly 1 in 20,000.  The odds of dying in a car accident are about 1 in 100.  So go ahead, take a chance and get that glimpse of the celebs!

  11. Chances are veryyy low! you have better chance of getting killed in LA traffic! I was scared of flying n my first flight ever was from LA to Israel! I was scared but i just went for it! you will be fine once u are up in the air! never let fear stop you from living. Its a longggg flight though...yikes!

  12. close your eyes and imagine you are flying keep doing this until you are less scared

  13. no you're fine. think of how many flights there are daily and how many crashes there have been. no comparison! =]

my moms always terrified of flying so she always orders a lot of drinks. my friends mom doesn't believe in drinking so she takes Nyquil. good luck!
