Fear of Thunderstorms. How To Cope?

I have always been afraid of storms.

In general I have a servere fear of death also. Which leads back to thunderstorms.

Usually when one comes I call my mom then my dad (If I'm home alone.) I usually try to listen to music or sing to calm me down but it doesn't help. My new strategy is hide under covers.

One is coming up now but my dad is home with me so I'm not as scared.

Please help me. I really need ways to cope with this fear.

  1. I used to be afraid of thunderstorms, until my dad told me this.

He said: the lightning is gone so fast, you don't have enough time to be afraid of it. And the thunder is just a loud noise, and noise is nothing to be afraid of.

    It worked for me.

  2. fears and phobias are hard to break. Facing it might be good. Next time it storms, stand out in the rain. Not under a tree or in a bare field, but a neighborhood would be good. If you are afraid, go in a car, but keep watching. Even if the car does get struck, nothing will happen to you.

Remember, the odds of you getting struck by lightning are almost zero.

  3. I'm CRAZY scared of storms too. They said its supposed to sever storm tomorrow and i am like dying inside. But I've gotten better. I used to hyperventilate when it was gonna rain. :] But then I just think, it has to storm and eventually it will pass over. But i hate the weather people cuz their like AHH WERE GONNA DIE! Your just fine!

    :]

  4. First, you must not get too worried about lightning hitting you. The chances of that are extremely small if you take the right precautions. For example, if you were to stand out in an open field holding something metallic, then you would almost certainly get struck by lightning. However, once you are inside a house or a building, the chances of you being struck drastically decrease. Lightning will not simply go through the window and hit you if you are just sitting there. When inside, you should avoid using the sink or the shower, as well as any electrical appliances including corded telephones (wireless phones are safe), computers, TV, etc.

Knowing how to protect yourself from something such as lightning will make you feel much better about dealing with it. You will see that it makes so much more sense once you know what lightning truly is and how it works. The websites below will give you the information you require to understand thunderstorms and how to protect yourself from them.

  5. I have a fear of thunderstorms too.

I used to hide in the bathroom, and stay there until it passed.

I also hide under the covers, I have lots of noise on too!

I am now very fond of them, I want to be a weather person.

My mom and dad have a way to calm me down. They told me when they start worring, i can too. They never worry, so I never worry!

    Neither should you!!

BTW: It is about to storm here too!
