Fear of defeat held us back, says Cesc Fabregas
Arsenal FC captain, Cesc Fabregas has admitted that his side’s apprehensive approach to the game was the main reason behind their defeat against Manchester United last week.
Arsenal lost the match 1-0 to United in the eagerly anticipated showdown of English giants in the English Premier League.
The Spaniard was of the opinion that the players were too scared of losing the match and did not focus on the game itself.
Cesc’s comments were true keeping in mind that the Gunners did not play to their full potential on Monday night and were unable to create clear-cut goal scoring opportunities.
He said, “The difference on the night was that we were scared of losing but they were not scared of winning. That was the big difference that played in our heads. Sometimes we seem scared of losing these big games. We don't
really go for it and we're tempted to drop back and see what the opposition will do.”
The midfielder also commented that the players have to perform according to their capabilities rather than relying on how the opposition plays, if the north-Londoners want to win their matches against the big sides.
Manchester United toppled their archrivals from the top of the Premier League when they emerged victorious at Old Trafford on Monday night. With the triumph over Gunners, the Red Devils were also able to preserve their unbeaten
run in the league this season.
Arsenal’s record against the top teams this season has not been impressive and they have already lost away matches against Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea FC in the Premier League.
However, the 23-year old was optimistic that his side could turn the tables when they face their title rivals at the Emirates Stadium in coming weeks.
He said, “I am realising more and more that football is about confidence and mentality. We have already played all the games against the rest of the top four sides away from home. They have all got to come to the Emirates and
we know that we can beat anyone at home. That gives us morale and confidence.”
Arsenal’s next match in the league is after Christmas, against reigning English champions http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 at the Emirates on 27th December.
Arsene Wenger’s men are currently level on 32 points with Manchester City after 17 games, and are 2 points behind leaders United.
